No more Toyota & Mercedes-AMG, Lotus Emira to feature new V6 engine from Horse Powertrain

After years of relying on engines produced by Toyota and Mercedes-AMG, Lotus has finally decided to transition to a new V6 engine from Horse Powertrain.

The 3.0L turbo hybrid V6 engine is expected to debut in the facelifted Lotus Emira by the end of the decade.

In an interview with Autocar, Lotus CEO Feng Qingfeng confirmed that the new V6 engine will replace the existing Toyota V6 and AMG four-cylinder engines.

Over 500 hp Power Output

The new engine is said to deliver an impressive 536 hp and 700 Nm of torque.

One of its advantages is its lighter weight, with the V6 engine estimated to be 10 kg lighter than any other V6 currently on the market and almost on par with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine.

The V6 will be paired with an automatic transmission and an integrated electric motor for additional power and lower emissions.

U.S. Market and EU Regulations as Deciding Factors

One reason for the choice of the V6 engine is the strong demand, particularly from the U.S. market.

According to Feng, most customers there prefer V6 engines, which explains why the Emira V6 has become the best-selling model.

Additionally, the existing V6 engine from Toyota is indeed in the process of being phased out.

This is due to its increasing difficulty in meeting the stringent EU regulatory requirements, compelling Horse to develop a new engine.

Possible Foundation for a New V8 Engine

Did you know that this new V6 engine actually uses a foundation from the existing four-cylinder engine?

According to Horse’s CEO Matias Giannini, the new V6 engine has a compact and lightweight design because it builds on a smaller engine framework.

This modular design technology allows Horse to easily scale the engine up or down, potentially creating a new V8 engine based on the V6 for future Lotus supercars.

No Demand for Emira EV

Another reason why the V6 is Lotus’s main focus is the unsuccessful electric sports car project.

Lotus initially planned to produce an electric sports car to replace the Emira in collaboration with Alpine.

However, the project was canceled when they found there was no demand for a zero-emission model.

BYD Malaysia unveils BYD Mansion Macalister in Penang

Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the authorised retail partner for BYD under Sime Motors, has unveiled BYD Mansion Macalister, a distinctive new electric mobility destination in Penang.

Located along the historic Jalan Macalister, the century-old building that now houses BYD Mansion Macalister previously served as a commercial landmark in the local community, housing various businesses and offices. Through a meticulous restoration and adaptive reuse process, this heritage property has been thoughtfully transformed into Malaysia’s first BYD heritage-concept showroom.

The restoration preserves and honours the building’s distinctive architectural character while introducing a contemporary retail environment designed around the future of electric mobility. The mansion begins a new chapter as BYD Mansion Macalister, representing a synthesis of heritage architecture and modern innovation.

Set on a 26,994 sq ft parcel of land with approximately 9,000 sq ft of built-up space, the property has been reimagined as a boutique automotive destination rather than a conventional dealership. The showroom features four curated display vehicles, presented like art pieces within a gallery-like setting. This is complemented by lounge-style consultation areas and a private delivery room designed for personalised vehicle handovers.

Beyond its showroom experience, BYD Mansion Macalister also serves as a fully integrated ownership destination. The on-site service centre is equipped with five work bays, one alignment bay and three service reception bays, providing customers with convenient access to after-sales care all within one compound.

To support the growing EV ecosystem in Penang, the mansion also features an urban charging hub equipped with one 60kW DC fast charger and seven AC chargers, offering convenient charging access for electric vehicle owners.

“BYD Mansion Macalister represents an important milestone in how we continue to evolve the automotive retail experience,” said Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Motors. “By transforming a historic property into a modern electric mobility destination, we are not only preserving an important part of Penang’s architectural heritage, but also creating a meaningful space where customers can experience the future of mobility. This reflects Sime Motors’ long-term commitment to supporting the growth of electric vehicles and expanding our presence across Malaysia.”

“The opening of BYD Mansion in Macalister is a meaningful milestone for BYD in Malaysia, reflecting our continued commitment to growing the brand in ways that are closer to local communities. What makes this showroom especially significant is how it brings together premium customer experience, innovation, and uniquely Malaysian cultural touches, creating a space that not only showcases our vehicles, but also reflects the warmth, identity, and progress of the market we are proud to serve,” added Jacob Ma, Deputy General Manager of BYD Malaysia.

This launch marks another significant milestone in Sime Darby Beyond Auto’s partnership with BYD, which began in December 2022. Today, the company operates an expanding network of BYD retail and service locations across Malaysia, including Ara Damansara, TREC Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Tebrau.

Sime Darby Beyond Auto’s performance within the BYD network has also been recognised nationally. BYD Penang was recently awarded Best BYD Dealer in Malaysia for overall performance, while the group secured 13 awards out of 27 awards at this year’s BYD Dealer Conference & Awards Night, reflecting its commitment to excellence in retail and customer experience.

With the opening of BYD Mansion Macalister, Sime Darby Beyond Auto continues to expand its presence while providing customers with a distinctive gateway into electric vehicle ownership.

Volvo Car Malaysia launches ‘Selamat Calculator’, encouraging Malaysians to reassess safety

Volvo Car Malaysia introduces the Selamat Calculator, an interactive reflection exercise developed in partnership with Mr Money TV to drive home the weight of one’s absence and everything it carries.

As part of its life-long commitment to safety, Volvo continues its Selamat mission of empowering and educating Malaysian drivers to make more conscious choices by quantifying what is truly at stake – and reinforcing the importance of being protected when things go wrong.

The Selamat Calculator is designed to turn an unimaginable possibility into a tangible reflection. It asks the difficult question: What happens if you never say, or receive, another “Selamat” again? Through a series of questions covering age, career, income, dependants, lifestyle, and personal stakes, the experience generates a safety risk profile alongside an estimate of the financial and emotional impact left behind, from transferred financial burdens and interrupted progress to futures left unrealised.

Participants are grouped into one of four life-stage profiles: the backbone of the family, the co-pilot in a partnership, the independent soloist with a future ahead, and the climber who has worked tirelessly to build the life they have today. More importantly, the self-assessment experience serves as a reminder that the consequences of inattention, complacency, and inaction are not measured only in a split second, but in the unlived moments, unfinished futures, and people we stand to lose if one day we do not make it home.

Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said: “Nothing is worth more than your life, but there are still times when we forget and take our safety for granted – drivers are humans after all. The Selamat Calculator isn’t meant to put a price on a life, but to act as a gentle reminder to appreciate the value of our presence and what stands to be lost in our absence. Because the true value of our Selamat isn’t measured by wealth but in the people we hold close and the accomplishments we make.”

Peter Yong, CEO & Co-Founder of Mr Money TV, said: At the end of the day, financial literacy is about more than managing numbers; it’s about how we value our most precious resource – our lives. We often prioritise luxuries while overlooking the silent “investments” that keep us around to enjoy them. The Selamat Calculator serves as a wake-up call, encouraging reflection on what truly matters and reminding us that the best and most important choices are not always financial ones, but the simplest: buckling our seatbelts, getting enough rest, or exercising patience behind the wheel. Safety is a shared responsibility. When we choose to stay safe, we do so not only for ourselves, but for everyone else on the road.”

The Selamat Calculator is one of several educational initiatives introduced by Volvo Car Malaysia to reinforce the importance of road safety fundamentals. Alongside the flagship Selamat Driving Experience set to take place on 16 – 17 May 2026, it forms part of Selamat – a thematic campaign by Volvo Car Malaysia, with the aim of transforming road safety from a regulatory obligation into a shared culture of responsibility.

“Selamat is in Volvo’s DNA and every Malaysian’s spirit. In every ‘Selamat’ we say, there’s a quiet wish that our loved ones arrive, live and return safely. Volvo carries the same hope that those around us are protected wherever they go, so that they can live for the moments that matter. We want to be part of the moment that matters most: the journey home.” said Yaw.

The Selamat Calculator is now available online at volvocarmalaysia.com/selamat, inviting Malaysians to reflect on the value of every journey home.

Perodua plans local assembly for Ativa Hybrid in Malaysia

Perodua is planning to transition the Ativa Hybrid to local production (CKD), according to a report by Bernama.

Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President and CEO of Perodua, stated that the company is currently finalizing discussions regarding the production timeline, pricing structures, and other essential details.

“Once these matters are finalized, we will make an official announcement. What is certain is that the Ativa Hybrid model will be manufactured locally,” he said during a press conference held during the recent visit of the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Noriyuki Shikata to the Perodua manufacturing facility.

It is understood that Perodua has received an investment of 1.5 billion yen (approximately RM37 million) from the Global South Fund to support the implementation of Japanese hybrid technology within the country.

The Perodua Ativa was officially launched in 2021 as the brand’s first model built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. Currently, the Ativa is exclusively offered with a 1.0-liter 1KR-VET turbocharged engine paired with a D-CVT transmission.

History of the Ativa Hybrid in Malaysia

In September 2022, Perodua initiated an electric vehicle mobility study involving 300 selected customers. Under this program, 300 units of the Ativa Hybrid were introduced as fully imported (CBU) units from the Japanese market.

The Ativa Hybrid utilizes a series hybrid powertrain system, where the electric motor is solely responsible for driving the wheels. In this configuration, the 1.2-liter WA-VEX engine acts strictly as a generator to charge the battery and power the electric motor.

Its Japanese counterpart, the Daihatsu Rocky Hybrid, features the e-Smart Hybrid system which consists of:

  • Engine: 1.2-liter WA-VEX three-cylinder (102 hp / 105 Nm)

Lotus Type 135: a 1,000+ hp V8 supercar, Esprit successor?

Lotus is reportedly developing a new supercar powered by a V8 engine, currently designated as the Type 135.

The last time Lotus utilized a V8 powerplant was in 2004, the same year production for the legendary Esprit officially ended.

The First Lotus Supercar

The Type 135 is slated to be Lotus’s first dedicated supercar and is expected to launch in 2028.

Within the current product hierarchy, the Type 135 will be positioned between the Emira sports car and the Evija hypercar.

This new model will feature a hybrid V8 configuration with an output exceeding 1,000 hp.

Mercedes-AMG or Toyota V8?

At this stage, Lotus has not released specific details regarding the engine supplier for the Type 135.

Currently, Lotus sources internal combustion engines for the Emira from two partners: Mercedes-AMG and Toyota.

Interestingly, both manufacturers are developing brand-new V8 powertrains set to debut officially this year.

The question remains: which will Lotus choose? A Mercedes-AMG V8 or a GR twin-turbo hybrid unit?

Not the First Lotus Hybrid

Technically, the Type 135 will not be the first hybrid vehicle produced by Lotus.

That title belongs to the Lotus Eletre PHEV, which is already available in the Chinese market with a total system output of 939 hp.

Will the Esprit Name Return?

A major point of speculation is whether the “Esprit” nameplate will be revived for this model.

From a heritage perspective, reviving the iconic name makes more sense than marketing it as an upgraded version of the Emira.

Furthermore, the design is said to draw inspiration from the Theory 1 concept introduced in September 2024.

The Future of the Emira

The Type 135 project is a core component of Lotus’s “Focus 2030” business plan.

In the near term, Lotus will also introduce an updated version of the Emira, featuring an enhanced engine and a weight-reduction program.

Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE005 launched in Malaysia – 46 sizes available, priced from RM351

Bridgestone Tyre Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd today officially launched its latest high-performance tire, the Potenza Adrenalin RE005 for the local market.

Michael Chung, Managing Director of Bridgestone Tyre Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, stated, “The Potenza Adrenalin RE005 reflects our commitment to offering exhilarating performance that meets the high expectations of today’s drivers.”

“Developed with Bridgestone’s motorsport DNA, this tire is designed to provide confident control, responsive handling, and a driving experience perfectly suited for Malaysia’s roads and weather conditions,” he added.

The tire is available in 46 different sizes, catering to rim diameters ranging from 15 to 20 inches. Retail prices range from RM351 to RM1,543.

Continuing the RE004 Legacy

As the fifth generation in the series, the RE005 builds upon the successful legacy of its predecessor, the Adrenalin RE004.

Key technical enhancements include an 8 percent improvement in dry grip and a 10 percent increase in wet grip, resulting in more consistent performance across various driving environments.

The tire features a wide block design that helps distribute pressure evenly, ensuring firmer traction and more precise control on both dry and wet surfaces.

Additionally, optimized connection blocks and A-shaped grooves contribute to superior stability during high-speed cornering and maneuvering. The inclusion of a wider internal rib design also ensures faster steering response.

Confident Control on Wet Roads

Engineered specifically for rainy conditions, the unique groove design enhances water evacuation capabilities, significantly reducing the risk of hydroplaning.

Furthermore, a new generation rubber compound improves overall grip and responsiveness.

This specialized compound offers enhanced heat resistance to ensure consistent, reliable performance. It also helps reduce rolling resistance, which contributes to better fuel efficiency.

The Multi-Round Block design further optimizes contact pressure on the tire shoulder, maximizing tread life and maintaining performance longevity.

Ready for Diverse Models, Including EVs

The Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE005 is now available at authorized Bridgestone dealers nationwide.

The range is compatible with a wide variety of vehicles, including standard sedans, high-performance cars, and Electric Vehicles (EVs).
