Sika conducts Malaysia’s first live automotive windscreen crash test

Sika, a leading Swiss-based specialty chemicals company and a global supplier of windscreen bonding solutions, staged Malaysia’s first exclusive live windscreen crash test at the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) PC3 Laboratory in Melaka.

The test demonstrated that a windscreen is structurally bonded to the vehicle body to strengthen the cabin and protect occupants in a crash, and that the wrong adhesive or poor workmanship can compromise that protection. The event is recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the First Automotive Windscreen Crash Test Evaluation 2026 in Malaysia.

The demonstration comes at a time when road safety remains a national priority. Malaysia recorded 6,537 road fatalities in 2025 and total road accidents reached a record 790,614 cases, both higher than the year before. Under the Malaysia Road Safety Plan 2022-2030, the country has committed to halving road deaths by 2030, a target these numbers show is slipping further out of reach. Amid these figures, the safety role of the windscreen is rarely discussed.

For the demonstration, a passenger car was crashed at MIROS PC3 in Ayer Molek, the national full-scale crash test laboratory in Melaka that is also used for ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) testing. The vehicle was run into a frontal barrier at 48 km/h, replicating a real-world collision to show how a correctly bonded windscreen holds in place and keeps the airbag and cabin working as designed. The windscreen supports the airbag as it inflates, helps keep occupants inside the vehicle and reinforces the roof in a rollover.

“A windscreen is a safety component, yet it is often replaced on price and speed alone. What matters just as much is the adhesive used and the standard of the installation, because those are what keep the glass in place when it is needed most. We chose to show this in a live crash rather than explain it on paper, so there is no doubt about how much the quality of a replacement matters,” said Daphne Wong, Head of Automotive & Industry, Sika Malaysia.

Poor installation carries real risk. A windscreen fitted with the wrong adhesive or before the bond has cured can detach in a collision, and Malaysia’s hot, humid climate shortens an adhesive’s working time, which makes skilled fitting matter even more. Sika runs a Certified Auto Glass Installer Program in Malaysia, training local workshops to fit windscreens to its standards.

In Malaysia, more than 400,000 cars are installed with Sika windscreen adhesive every year. The live crash test used SikaTack DRIVE, Sika’s automotive glass replacement adhesive with superior application properties. It offers a 60-minute Minimum Drive Away Time (MDAT) and has been tested with 95th percentile crash test dummies against the United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 212, an international benchmark that measures whether a bonded windscreen stays in place during a crash rather than being pushed out, which is what allows it to support the airbag and the roof.

Sika has been bonding windscreens for the automotive industry since 1980 and helped establish the industry’s safe drive-away time standards. Over the past four decades it has conducted more than 80 crash tests to verify passenger safety after windscreen replacement.

SikaTack DRIVE is available through Sika’s certified installer network in Malaysia. For more information, visit https://mys.sika.com/en/safe-auto-glass-replacement.html.

Alongside the crash test, Sika is running the Sika Certified Auto Glass Installer Campaign, which encourages car owners to choose a certified workshop for a safe windscreen replacement. Sika’s certified installers work exclusively with Sika windscreen adhesives and follow a continuous training and certification programme.

From 15 September to 31 December 2026, customers who have their windscreen replaced at a certified workshop can enter a monthly lucky draw by submitting a photo of the workshop’s Sika Certified Auto Glass Installer signboard together with their receipt to Sika Malaysia. Three winners are drawn each month, each receiving a petrol card worth RM100.

Suzuki unveils e Sky EV with 310 km range, Europe launch set for 2027

Following the debut of the BYD Racco, Japan’s electric kei car segment continues to grow with the arrival of a new contender, the Suzuki e Sky.

The e Sky is the production version that retains most of the design elements seen on the Vision e‑Sky concept.

Suzuki will begin selling the e Sky in Japan this autumn, and interestingly, the model is also slated for launch in Europe and the UK in 2027.

Specifications

According to Suzuki, the e Sky was developed to help owners transition from ICE vehicles to EVs. As such, its dimensions closely follow current kei car requirements.

The e Sky measures 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, 1,625 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm.

Built on the Heartect e platform, the e Sky uses a front e‑Axle that integrates the motor, inverter and gearbox. Official output figures have yet to be announced.

Battery & Charging

This electric kei car is equipped with a 26 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a driving range of up to 310 km.

This impressive figure is partly due to its lightweight construction, with the e Sky tipping the scales at just 1,030 kg.

For comparison, the BYD Racco with a larger 35.84 kWh battery offers only a 10 km advantage over the e Sky.

Using a standard household outlet, a full charge takes eight hours, or 4.5 hours with a 6 kW wallbox. DC fast charging at 50 kW brings the battery from low to 80% in just 25 minutes.

The e Sky also supports Vehicle‑to‑Home (V2H) and Vehicle‑to‑Load (V2L) functions via a 100v/1500W AC outlet.

Equipment

The exterior design of the e Sky remains close to the Vision e‑Sky concept. For production, it receives larger LED headlamp housings, conventional side mirrors, a simplified grille, smaller wheels and traditional door handles.

The bumper features a single cooling air intake, while the rear incorporates a floating‑roof design, larger LED taillights and body‑coloured bumper cladding.

Inside, the cabin is equipped with a 10.1‑inch infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, a traditional gear selector and a dedicated climate control panel.

Other features include a practical passenger‑side dashboard tray, heated seats and steering wheel, and an electric heater that particularly useful during Japan’s winter season.

Rivals

Beyond the BYD Racco, the Suzuki e Sky will compete against other electric kei cars such as the Honda N‑One e:, Mitsubishi eK X EV and Nissan Sakura EV.

Malaysia Speed Festival 111 laps Merdeka Race returns to Sepang Circuit

Race fans are invited to experience the long weekend with more than 200 racing machines and 300 competitors for a weekend of high-speed four and two wheels racing ahead of Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka celebration in the 2026 MSF Merdeka Race at the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit from 29-30 August.

Now into its 9th consecutive edition, the MSF Merdeka Endurance races will feature a grueling 111-lap non-stop endurance race for cars that will cover approximately 615km around the 5.534km circuit, and a 33-lap non-stop endurance race for Superbikes with a race distance of almost 183km.

The MSF SuperTurismo Merdeka 111 Endurance for cars requires teams to field at least two drivers per car, and make a minimum of two three-minute compulsory pitstops – unregulated driving stints by each driver creates a unique arrangement of strategies to unfold as each team will have their own plan to race to, based on their pre-race calculations.  It is divided into seven individual classes: Super Series Limited; EXN GT86 x BRZ Racing Cup; Super Compatto; Standard Production; Standard Production MAX; Super Production; and K-Series Battle.

The MSF SuperTurismo Merdeka 111 Endurance race flags off at 5.30pm on Sunday 30 August, with teams battling through the evening before crossing the finish line just before midnight as Malaysia celebrates its 69th Merdeka Day.

The high-octane weekend will consist of the MSF SuperTurismo and MotoMSF battles for both four and two wheels respectively.

Kicking off the two-day race weekend on Saturday, 29 August will be three night sprint races, featuring two five-lap races in the Super Unlimited class and an eight-lap race in the Skilldrvn One Make race Series, running from 9.00pm to 11.35pm.

The action continues on Sunday, 30 August, with two-wheel competitors taking centrestage in the morning. The American V-Twin Cup by Prodigy Racecraft will feature Harley-Davidson motorcycles in a seven-lap race, followed by the MotoMSF Superbikes Merdeka 33 Endurance, a 33-lap superbike endurance race held at the circuit’s South Track between 11.30am and 2.00pm.

The MSF Superbikes Merdeka 33 Endurance race pits a team of 2-riders sharing racing duties to complete the race non-stop, with compulsory pitstops every 8-laps – in the Malaysian heat this is a major feat of physical endurance by the riders in their full-leather suits. Riders from around the region come to complete in this race which was first run last year and has grown in prominence.

Four-wheel racing resumes Sunday afternoon with the second stint of the Skilldrvn One make Race Series, featuring a 10-lap race at 2.15pm, followed by the Merdeka 75 Cup at 3.00pm. The 75-minute endurance race will feature four classes – Saga Cup, MyVi Cup, CamPro Cup and Tuner Production.

“The Merdeka race has grown tremendously over the years, and being able to put together the annual 111 laps endurance is a significant milestone for MSF,” said Adian Yein Khalid, MSF Principal.

“What makes this race special is that it brings together veteran racers and newer faces, established teams and some of the region’s experienced competitors on the same grid. It is a true test of speed, consistency, strategy and teamwork, and we are proud to see how far the event has come as well as how it has contributed to motorsports both locally and internationally.”

Returning to defend the overall Merdeka Race title they won last year will be veteran racer Faidzil Alang and Mohamed Hafez, amidst a grid of strong local contenders as well as racers from Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Paddock passes are available on site for just RM45, giving fans access to the race weekend from 10.00am to 11.00pm. Better yet, children below 12 years old enter free, making it a perfect family weekend at the circuit. Beyond the racing action, fans can explore the paddock, refuel at a selection of food trucks, and shop for merchandise and motorsport goodies from participating vendors throughout both days.

The MSF Merdeka Race is organized by Kelab Sukan Motor MSF Malaysia, an official club registered with the Malaysian Sports Commission and an affiliate member of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM).
