AXCR 2026: Team Mitsubishi Ralliart secures second consecutive victory

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced that Team Mitsubishi Ralliart clinched the overall victory at the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2026, held from 9 to 15 August.

The achievement marks the team’s second consecutive AXCR championship, and also represents their first-ever AXCR win featuring a fully Japanese driver–co-driver pairing.

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Performance Highlights

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart fielded three T1‑spec Mitsubishi Triton pickup trucks in AXCR 2026.

Driver Katsuhiko Taguchi secured the overall win with a total time of 12 hours 58 minutes 20 seconds.

Kazuto Koide finished 27th overall (20 hours 58 minutes 30 seconds), while Chayapon Yotha completed the rally in 36th position (34 hours 48 minutes 43 seconds).

Taguchi began Leg 1 with positive momentum, successfully minimizing time loss that affected many early competitors. Despite muddy and rutted terrain caused by heavy rain, he ended the opening leg in third place overall.

His pace continued to improve, recording the fastest SS time in Leg 3 with an eight‑second advantage.

By the end of Leg 5 — the longest stage of the rally — Taguchi and co-driver Yasui had built a gap of more than five minutes.

With a measured and strategic approach, the pair secured their first AXCR overall victory with a winning margin of 2 minutes 25 seconds, delivering Team Mitsubishi Ralliart’s second straight AXCR championship.

Competing in AXCR for the third time, Kazuto Koide faced early difficulties after getting stuck on a roadside embankment and receiving a timeout penalty. However, he later posted the eighth-fastest time in SS5 and ultimately finished 27th overall.

Defending champion Chayapon Yotha encountered a puncture on rocky terrain during Leg 2, losing time while changing the tyre. He recovered to sixth place in Leg 3, but the second half of Leg 4 forced another tyre change, followed by engine issues at the start of Leg 5.

Despite multiple setbacks and penalties, Yotha managed to complete the rally in 36th position.

A Challenging Route Spanning Over 2,000 km

Image: Mitsubishi Motors Thailand

The 31st edition of AXCR featured a total distance of 2,145.19 km, including 921.80 km of Special Stages (SS).

Held entirely in Thailand, the rally presented demanding terrain such as dense forests, large rocky sections, river crossings, deep slippery mud, and hot, humid weather conditions — all of which tested the endurance of drivers, crews and machines.

AXCR 2026 Route Summary

  • Start: Walking Street, Pattaya
  • Leg 1: Pattaya → Prachin Buri
  • Leg 2: Prachin Buri → Nakhon Sawan
  • Leg 3: Nakhon Sawan Loop

  • 1.5‑litre turbocharged engine
  • Electric motor

The system delivers a combined output of 223 PS and 476 Nm, enabling a 0–100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds.

Dimensions

The crossover measures:

  • Length: 4,471 mm
  • Width: 1,833 mm
  • Height: 1,641 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,720 mm

Compared to the Ora Good Cat, the Ora 5 HEV is 236 mm longer, 58 mm wider, 45 mm taller, and has a 70 mm longer wheelbase.

Despite its larger footprint, the Ora 5 HEV offers a cargo capacity of 272 litres.

BYD Sealion 7 Premium completes 500 km drive challenge without recharging – test drive review

The BYD Sealion 7 Premium is rated for 650 km of driving range under the NEDC cycle, thanks to its upgraded 800V electric architecture.

With that in mind, we were tasked with driving over 500 km without performing any battery charging throughout the journey.

To ensure complete transparency, the charging ports on all vehicles were sealed with stickers to prevent any form of tampering.

Below is a summary of our two‑day drive:

Day One

Route: Ara Damansara → Gambang, stopover in Mentakab via old trunk roads

We departed from BYD Ara Damansara with 99% battery SoC and an indicated driving range of 649 km.

After navigating several highways congested with morning traffic, our Ultraviolet‑coloured Sealion 7 Premium successfully passed the Gombak toll plaza.

From there, we maintained a consistent driving pattern despite steeper gradients, roadworks, and slow‑moving heavy vehicles.

After the Karak toll plaza, we exited the highway and continued on federal roads towards our first stop in Mentakab. Compared to the highway, the old road proved more challenging with hilly terrain, sharp bends, and uneven surfaces.

For a driver accustomed to heavier steering, the Sealion 7’s handling felt light and easy to manage — something most users will appreciate.

The suspension also performed well, absorbing bumps and rough patches effectively. However, rear passengers may experience some discomfort due to the rear suspension’s tendency to bounce over uneven surfaces.

We arrived in Mentakab for lunch with 79% battery SoC and 517 km of remaining range.

After the break, we continued towards Gambang. Despite the hot weather, the cabin remained comfortable thanks to air‑conditioning vents for every row — each of which can be adjusted manually without relying on the central touchscreen.

Rear occupants also benefit from generous headroom and legroom, complemented by a flat floor layout.

After slightly more than an hour of driving, we reached our overnight stop with 62% battery SoC and 404 km of remaining range.

Based on Day One’s drive, we recorded an energy consumption of 13.9 kWh/100 km.

Day Two

Route: Gambang → Ara Damansara, stopover at Ayu Awana, Genting Highlands

We began Day Two under cloudy skies with intermittent rain. With the battery at around 60% and 390 km of remaining range, we continued on the highway.

For safety, we maintained speeds between 70–90 km/h.

Unlike the previous day, continuous highway driving resulted in slightly higher energy consumption at 14.8 kWh/100 km.

Upon passing the Bentong toll plaza, range anxiety began to creep in, the upcoming stretch was significantly steeper compared to the relatively flat Gambang–Bentong section.

As expected, the uphill climb pushed energy consumption up to 26.1 kWh/100 km.

Upon reaching Ayu Awana, the battery dropped to 21% SoC with 138 km of remaining range.

During the descent, we activated stronger regenerative braking to maximise energy recovery. As a result, the battery increased by 2%, and the remaining range rose to 150 km as we approached the Gombak toll plaza.

It wasn’t a dramatic gain for an EV with a large battery, but it was enough to ease our concerns.

Ultimately, we completed 509 km of driving with 19% battery SoC and 120 km of remaining range.

In theory, yes you can achieve the range displayed by the vehicle’s computer. But it requires proper driving technique and a light right foot.

Is the Sealion 7 worth buying?

The Sealion 7 is a strong contender for families seeking a spacious and comfortable SUV, priced at just RM188,800.

With its 800V architecture, it offers more efficient energy usage and significantly faster DC charging at 230 kW, enabling 10–80% charging in just 24 minutes.

One of the highlights for the writer is the cockpit layout, which retains many physical buttons for essential functions including drive modes, gear selector, audio controls, and a familiar start button similar to ICE vehicles.

Prefer an alternative?

If fast charging isn’t a priority and range matters more, you can still find the previous Sealion 7 Premium at used‑car dealerships.

Visually, both versions look almost identical.

Performance remains the same at 308 hp, 380 Nm, and rear‑wheel drive. However, the earlier model uses a 400V architecture with an 82.56 kWh battery pack.

It offers 567 km of range and supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW (10–80% in 31 minutes).

Key features include:

  • 58‑litre frunk
  • 500 L / 1,769 L cargo space
  • 10.25‑inch digital cluster
  • 15.6‑inch central touchscreen
  • 50‑inch augmented‑reality head‑up display
  • Leather upholstery
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • 50W wireless charging
  • 12‑speaker Dynaudio sound system

Safety features remain identical to the current model.

Volvo Car Malaysia named ‘Rakan Selamat’ for AJL40

Volvo Car Malaysia has announced its collaboration with TV3 for the 40th edition of Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL40).

As the official transportation partner — or Rakan Selamat — Volvo brings its philosophy of safety and peace of mind to Malaysia’s biggest music stage.

Supporting the Transportation of Top Artists

Earlier this year, Volvo sponsored the transportation of artists during the AJL40 promotional tour held nationwide throughout July and August.

Ahead of the grand finale, Volvo’s premium lineup — including the ES90 sedan, XC90 and XC60 SUVs, as well as the EC40 and EX30 electric SUVs — will accompany the 10 finalists competing for the coveted title.

This historic collaboration with AJL40 provides Volvo with a meaningful platform to bring its human‑centric vision closer to Malaysians. It also follows the brand’s Selamat campaign, launched earlier in January.

In addition, Volvo Car Malaysia has introduced the Selamat Calculator, developed in partnership with Mr Money TV.

A Shared Vision of Safety and Confidence

Patricia Yaw, Director of Sales and Marketing at Volvo Car Malaysia, shared:

“Our Selamat philosophy is about protecting what matters most and creating a space that brings peace of mind. As ‘Rakan Selamat’, we want to offer Malaysia’s finest talents a moment of calm confidence inside our vehicles. At the same time, this collaboration allows us to welcome more families to experience the uncompromised luxury and safety that define Volvo.”

Nini Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Media Prima Television Networks and Primeworks Studios, welcomed Volvo’s involvement:

“The presence of a brand like Volvo — one that consistently champions safety and family values — aligns perfectly with our vision and adds tremendous significance to this milestone celebration.”

Inokom launches new RM300 million automotive paint facility

Inokom Corporation Sdn Bhd has launched its new automotive paint facility (Paint Shop 3 or PS3) at its plant in Kulim.

Valued at approximately RM300 million, PS3 is one of Sime Darby Berhad’s largest automotive assembly investments to date.

The investment aims to position Inokom as a preferred assembly partner within both the local and regional automotive ecosystem, while creating job opportunities and strengthening overall competitiveness.

The development of PS3 was carried out with close collaboration from Mazda’s technical support team, which provided knowledge transfer, training, and technical guidance.

Increased Production Capacity

The facility is designed to support the production of up to 50,000 painted vehicle bodies per year, based on two‑shift operations and a rate of 15 units per hour.

It also has the capability to paint plastic components.

With the addition of PS3, Inokom’s combined paint shop capacity now increases to 100,000 units annually.

The facility supports multiple vehicle models and offers the flexibility to scale production volumes to meet future demand.

Automation Capabilities

Key equipment installed at PS3 includes:

  • 32 painting and sealing robots
  • an automatic Cartridge Bell (CBS) colour‑change system
  • an automatic pre‑treatment and electro‑deposition (PTED) system
  • an integrated delivery system

The CBS system can perform colour changes in under 10 seconds and supports up to 27 colour variations, helping reduce downtime and minimise wastage.

PS3 also adopts a three‑coat, one‑bake painting process, which is more energy‑efficient and shortens cycle time without compromising quality.

Environmental Sustainability

PS3 incorporates several sustainability‑focused technologies:

  • a Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) system that reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 60%
  • a dry scrubber filtration system that reduces water usage in spray booth operations
  • the use of water‑based paint, which is more environmentally friendly

BMW Malaysia & UM build solar‑powered smart device charging station using repurposed EV batteries

BMW Group Malaysia and Universiti Malaya (UM) have developed a solar‑powered smartphone charging station built using repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

This marks the first real‑world application completed under the RE:GENERATE x Universiti Malaya research initiative.

The project was designed by Associate Professor Dr. Tan Chia Kwang together with his research team and PhD students at the UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC).

Below are the key facts you should know:

System Components

The setup consists of second‑life EV battery packs and reused solar panels, supported by:

  • a solar charge controller
  • a photovoltaic inverter
  • a battery management system (BMS)
  • USB fast chargers

Energy Storage

The 1.5 kWh system uses three BMW battery modules, each approximately 10 years old.

Dr. Tan’s team conducted detailed assessment and refurbishment work, successfully restoring 30–40% of the batteries’ original capacity.

Charging Ports

The station features four charging ports: three USB Type‑C ports and one Lightning port.

Total output is 200W, with up to 100W available per port.

Service Life

The system is expected to operate for at least five years, based on:

  • current battery condition
  • projected usage and discharge cycles
  • real‑world usage patterns

The charging station uses low‑capacity EV battery packs, which are suitable for lighter charging needs.

Meanwhile, higher‑capacity EV battery packs are more appropriate for off‑grid rural electrification projects, such as the installation at Pos Sinderut, Kuala Lipis, Pahang.

Once these batteries reach the end of their second life, Dr. Tan’s team plans to repurpose them again for a third‑life smartphone charging station project.

This approach completes a full three‑stage battery lifecycle — from EV use, to rural household applications, and finally to public charging infrastructure.
