Chery Malaysia showcases transparency through the CSH Battery Safety Challenge

Chery Malaysia has successfully conducted its first Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) Battery Safety Challenge in Malaysia.

This initiative reinforces the automotive brand’s ongoing commitment to battery safety through transparent, real-world testing focused on safety.

According to Men Lin Bo, Executive Vice President of Chery Corporate Malaysia, “Safety is at the core of our development process.”

He further explained that the demonstration process was conducted openly to help the public understand the technologies and standards being applied.

Live Demonstration for Media

The event was attended by over 100 guests, including government agency officials and media representatives.

Prior to the testing session, an information-sharing session was held with Chery battery expert Zhang Wei Bo.

This allowed the media to grasp the technical context before witnessing the demonstration.

During the test session, Chery utilized the same battery unit for the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV models.

The battery unit underwent high-temperature fire testing which included a preheating phase and continuous exposure to flames for 1 minute and 20 seconds.

Throughout the test, the battery remained stable without any fire escalation, electrical failure, or uncontrolled deformation.

The media was also given the opportunity to observe the condition of the battery before, during, and after exposure to fire.

Continuation of the Global Program

The Battery Safety Challenge in Malaysia is a continuation of programs conducted globally.

In this series of tests, Chery’s battery systems were evaluated under various extreme scenarios, for example:

  • China – frontal collision tests and spiral roll tests
  • Indonesia – saltwater immersion for 53 hours
  • South Africa – frontal collision tests at a speed of 50 km/h
  • Ecuador – six rounds of gunfire tests to demonstrate the structural strength and battery integrity
  • Middle East – saltwater immersion at 60 degrees Celsius for 48 hours, and buried in Kuwaiti desert sand for 48 hours
  • Mexico – under-vehicle friction tests

Proven Safety Performance

In addition to the Safety Challenge, Chery Malaysia also highlighted the strong safety achievements of its hybrid electric vehicle lineup.

The Chery TIGGO 7 PHEV has received a 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating with an all-time high score of 94.68.

Chery Malaysia also offers an extended battery warranty of up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometers that covers the battery pack, drive motor, and vehicle control unit.

This comprehensive protection is designed to provide peace of mind to customers, supporting long-term ownership confidence and reinforcing Chery’s focus on reliable hybrid technology.

Lee Wen Hsiang, Vice President of Chery Malaysia, explained that the offering of PHEV models reflects a holistic approach to safety and ownership confidence.

“From conducting rigorous and extreme safety tests to providing long-term battery warranty support and achieving a 5-Star ASEAN NCAP score, each of these elements is built on our long-term commitment to protect our customers.

“This achievement is about delivering a comprehensive and reliable Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)—a vehicle that combines proven safety performance, dependable technology, and assurance throughout their ownership journey,” he added.

Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV successfully achieves 1,200 km mission without refueling – test drive

Chery Malaysia launched its latest plug-in hybrid SUV model, the Tiggo 7 PHEV, two months ago, with a starting price of RM129,800.

This makes the Tiggo 7 PHEV a highly worthwhile option to consider, especially for those affected by the implementation of the Budi95 subsidy and who do not want to make an electric vehicle (EV) their primary mode of transport.

On paper, the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine (143 PS/215 Nm) paired with an electric motor (204 PS/310 Nm), yielding a total power output of 279 PS and 365 Nm.

With an 18.3 kWh battery pack (electric range of 90 km) and a 60-liter fuel tank, the Tiggo 7 PHEV can achieve a travel distance of up to 1,200 km.

The question now is: Can the Tiggo 7 PHEV reach the claimed distance?

Recently, Chery Malaysia organized a media test drive session called the Endless Horizon Challenge.

The challenge was straightforward: prove that the Tiggo 7 PHEV can achieve a driving range of 1,200 km without refueling or recharging the battery.

To avoid any cheating, both the fuel tank cap and the charging port were sealed with stickers, and we had to rely solely on what was provided from the starting line.

Day One: Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu

Our journey began at Bamboo Hills with a full 60-liter fuel tank and a 100 percent battery.

While the meter reading showed a driving distance of 862 km, it was enough to make any driver feel nervous. “Can this SUV really reach 1,200 km?”

Driving through the morning traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur was not a significant challenge.

This was due to the Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) system, which intelligently adjusted its operations based on the throttle input from the driver’s right foot.

For most of the time, it relied solely on the electric motor, with the engine engaging only when necessary, especially when climbing steep roads on the KL-Karak Highway.

In Tandem mode, drivers hardly noticed when the engine was activated, thanks to its smooth operation that did not transmit any vibrations to passengers in the cabin.

Once we entered the East Coast area, rain began to fall, necessitating a slower driving speed—this was not an issue since we were committed to achieving the 1,200 km challenge.

The spacious cabin felt comfortable, with ample legroom and headroom, which helped reduce fatigue during long journeys.

We arrived in Kuala Terengganu shortly after 8 PM, having covered a total distance of approximately 471 km, leaving us with about 721 km remaining.

The fuel consumption rate recorded was 3.5 liters per 100 km.

Day Two: Kuala Terengganu to Royal Belum to Penang

The rain that had been falling since midnight made the second day appear more challenging.

We started from the Raia Hotel in Kuala Terengganu in heavy rain, leading to a lower average speed compared to the previous day.

Additionally, we had to navigate normal road conditions with varying quality asphalt and some areas that were flooded.

However, this was not a major problem as the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV is capable of traversing water up to 500 mm deep.

A greater challenge awaited us on the East-West Highway, which is typically associated with large trucks and wild animals.

While navigating uphill roads with countless bends, we noticed that the fuel meter reading dropped at a quicker rate than usual.

Due to the still wet road conditions, we drove the Tiggo 7 PHEV more cautiously to avoid any unwanted incidents.

Upon reaching the Titiwangsa Rest Area in Gerik, Perak, the fuel meter indicated we had only 470 km of range left.

This was enough to raise our concerns as there was still a long distance to cover.

However, the advantages of the CSH system became apparent when the Tiggo 7 PHEV began descending hills, allowing the system to recharge the battery through regenerative braking.

We used the lowest brake setting to ensure smoother driving.

After lunch at Royal Belum, we continued our journey towards Penang, needing to take an alternative route due to a flooded road before arriving at Sungai Petani.

After covering 433 km, we arrived at the Crowne Plaza Hotel with the fuel meter indicating 368 km remaining.

Throughout this East-West route, we noticed one thing: the Tiggo 7 PHEV offers significantly better handling and driving dynamics compared to ICE models.

We took the opportunity to inquire about this, and Chery Malaysia confirmed that specific tuning had been applied by the local R&D unit to enhance handling and make the driving experience more comfortable.

We will provide further insights on this if given the opportunity.

Day Three: Penang to Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur

The final day arrived for us to complete the 1,200 km mission without needing to refuel or recharge the battery.

From our overnight stay in Penang, we continued towards Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, traversing the North-South Highway.

Besides the usual traffic congestion around the Menora Tunnel, the rain throughout the journey from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur ‘forced’ us to drive more cautiously at a moderate speed.

All this was to ensure that the Tiggo 7 PHEV did not get stranded along the way.

As the trip meter displayed 1,200 km at Bestari Jaya, we cheered with joy, having accomplished the mission set by Chery Malaysia.

Upon returning to Bamboo Hills, the Tiggo 7 PHEV recorded a total driving distance of 1,248 km, with the cluster meter showing a remaining range of approximately 93 km and a battery capable of allowing the SUV to travel an additional 16 km on electric power alone.

The overall fuel consumption rate was around 4.5 liters per 100 km, significantly lower than the official figure of 5 liters/100 km.

Who would have thought that the most affordable PHEV in Malaysia could perform comparably with other, much more expensive PHEVs on the market?

Want a sporty image? Reliable handling? A cabin that is comfortable, spacious, and quiet? Fuel-efficient? The Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV can meet your expectations

Chery Malaysia, Carsome join forces to revolutionise car trade-ins

CHERY Malaysia announced that it has recently signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
Carsome and Carsome Academy.

The primary focus of these partnerships is to revolutionise vehicle trade-ins and enhance soft skills within the brand’s network of representatives.

Carsome is making the process seamless for new Chery customers walking into their showroom. Upon opting for a trade-in, customers can have Carsome conduct a vehicle inspection at their preferred location.

Following the inspection, Carsome will promptly offer a price for the trade-in vehicle. Once the offer is accepted, customers can then hand over their old vehicle before or while collecting their new Chery vehicle.

Carsome also threw in a special campaign to Chery dealers by offering an additional RM500 on top of the trade-in offer price for their customers who trade in their vehicles from 15 January to 15 February 2024.

Meanwhile, the second MoU aims to bolster soft skills within Chery’s network of representatives. The agreement will centre on four aspects, namely Upskilling Workfore, Peneraju Skil Motor Vehicle Inspection Programme, Training & Placements and Marketing Initiatives.

Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President Lee Wen Hsiang said both collaborations were timely for Chery Malaysia’s growing customer base over the months since the brand debut in July last year.

“The collaboration with CARSOME will be beneficial and important for our dealers, especially with the increase in customers who seek to trade in their old cars for a new Chery vehicle,” he said.

Additionally, with plans to expand showrooms to 48 outlets by the end of 2024, there will be an increase in the workforce, including sales representatives and managers. Therefore, ensuring the importance of Chery’s customer service becomes a crucial step for the brand’s future success.

Chery Malaysia sold 4,501 cars from September to December 2023

CHERY Malaysia has announced that it sold a total of 4,501 vehicles in 2023, a somewhat remarkable achievement given that the company only began delivering the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro in September.

Speaking at the company’s annual business briefing, Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President Lee Wen Hsiang said over 80% of the total sales was contributed by the Omoda 5.

According to Chery Auto Malaysia’s Vice President, Lee Wen Hsiang, over 80 percent of this total was contributed by the Omoda 5.

Lee added that Chery also conducted a sales satisfaction survey where over 1,000 customers of the brand gave it an exceptionally high score of 94 out of 100.

Lee also said that despite facing initial comments when Chery was first introduced to the Malaysian market, the brand has steadfastly prioritised resolving customer issues and will continue doing so in 2024.

Among the efforts made to achieve this target is through expanding its network nationwide. Chery Auto Malaysia Network Development Director Soon Boon Ping, stated that the company currently has 32 outlets operating nationwide with a workforce of 550 employees.

“By at the end of 2024, we hope to have at least 48 outlets in operation and that will also contribute to 70% increase in our 3S and 4S centres,” said Soon.

On product, Chery Auto Malaysia Product Director Michael Chew shared that the company will launch four new models in 2024, starting with the Omoda E5 in March.

The electric SUV will be followed by the Tiggo 7 Pro in the second quarter and two more models in the fourth quarter. Notably, one of the two yet-to-be-named models will be an “affordable” and “higher volume” car for the rakyat. Could that be the Tiggo 4 Pro that was previewed back in October 2022?

Chery Tiggo 7 Pro coming to Malaysia in Q2 2024

During its business briefing in Kuala Lumpur earlier today, Chery Malaysia confirmed that they will be launching the Tiggo 7 Pro in the second quarter of this year.

The five-seater SUV will be Chery’s fourth model to be introduced in Malaysia following the Omoda 5, Tiggo 8 Pro, and Omoda E5. As previously reported, the Omoda E5 is slated for launch in March.

In addition to confirming the Tiggo 7 Pro’s arrival, Chery Malaysia also took the opportunity to divulge preliminary specifications for the upcoming model.

Unlike in Indonesia, where the Tiggo 7 Pro is offered with a 1.5-litre turbo engine, we will be getting the more potent 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo engine capable of making 197 hp and 290 Nm of torque.

The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.

Elsewhere, the Tiggo 7 Pro will come with 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and ventilated front seats. Interestingly, the image used in the presentation slide shows a different front bumper design from the unit previewed last year.

The infotainment system includes 24.6-inch dual display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a Sony premium audio system with eight speakers.

Safety-wise, the version we’re getting will be equipped with 17 ADAS features, five more than what you can find in the Tiggo 8 Pro. Also included is a 540-degree camera.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, but it is expected that the Tiggo 7 Pro will be positioned between the Omoda 5 (RM108,800 to RM118,800) and Tiggo 8 Pro (RM159,800). It is also highly likely to be locally assembled in Kulim, Kedah alongside the two aforementioned models.
