The Nissan GT-R production finally ends after 18 years

After 18 years of production, Nissan has officially closed the curtain on the high-performance R35 GT-R model.

During its production run from 2007 to now, Nissan produced approximately 48,000 units of the GT-R.

The final unit to roll off the production line is the Midnight Purple GT-R Premium Edition T-Spec, which will be delivered to its owner in Japan.

Is this truly the end for the GT-R generation?

According to Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa, “Over the more than 18 years, the Nissan GT-R R35 has left a mark in automotive history.”

“For GT-R fans, this is not a permanent farewell to the GT-R. The model will return one day.”

However, he did not reveal any details regarding plans for reviving the GT-R in the future.

“I ask you all to be patient. We have not finalized any plans, but the GT-R will evolve and return.”

Nissan previously surprised the world with the unveiling of the Hyper Force concept model, touted as a successor to the GT-R R35 at the Japan Mobility Show 2023.

This concept model is said to produce up to 1,341 hp, reach speeds of 322 km/h, and be equipped with solid-state battery technology.

Nissan actually faces greater challenges beyond plans to continue the legacy of the GT-R.

Under the Re:Nissan recovery plan, the manufacturer is preparing to close up to seven assembly plants and reduce its workforce by up to 20,000 employees.

Thus, given that the Nissan GT-R is a low-volume model, it may be difficult to see a new generation of the GT-R in the near future, despite the clear intention of Nissan’s leadership to make a new GT-R part of their long-term agenda.

Over 400 participants competed in Castrol’s simracing championship

The Unleashed Youth Simracing Championship has officially concluded at Sunway Pyramid on August 17.

The final round of the championship, organized by Cove Circuit and sponsored by Castrol Malaysia, saw over 400 participants from across Malaysia competing for a total prize pool of RM30,000.

More than 349 competitors participated in the male category, while the female category featured 93 racers, highlighting the increasing interest in sim racing among women.

The male category champion took home a grand prize of RM6,000, while the female category champion received RM3,000.

The championship was part of Castrol’s broader initiative that combined the excitement of motorsports with an engine care awareness campaign through a series of roadshows at several universities in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor Bahru.

In addition to demonstrations on the proper use of engine oil—such as Castrol EDGE, which can enhance power, acceleration, and engine durability—consumers also enjoyed exclusive promotions for Castrol EDGE and Castrol MAGNATEC products throughout the event.

Also this year, Castrol successfully captured the attention of over 100,000 visitors at the Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur (TASKL) with a display of a Castrol livery painting on the legendary JDM Nissan Silvia S14 by Zameer Pentbrush, alongside interactive activities and opportunities to win various exciting prizes.

Ringbrothers’ restomod project ‘Octavia’ originally a 1971 Aston Martin DBS

At first glance, the vehicle before us might be mistaken for a restored Ford Mustang fitted with entirely new body panels.

This answer can be classified as half-correct and half-wrong.

The reason is that this machine is originally a 1971 Aston Martin DBS, with carbon fiber body panels produced by Ringbrothers, based in Wisconsin.

The design of body panels resembling a muscle car took 3,900 hours for the design process, followed by a formation and construction process that consumed 8,200 hours to complete.

Additionally, the front track width has been increased by 203 mm, while the rear track width is 254 mm wider.

As if that wasn’t enough, the wheelbase has also been extended by 76 mm, contributing to a more formidable appearance on the road.

Octavia is powered by a 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8 engine capable of generating up to 805 hp, which drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual Tremec transmission.

The secret behind this supercar-level power lies in the pairing with a custom 2.65-liter twin-screw supercharger from Happop, followed by a modified fuel system and a custom exhaust system from Ringbrothers.

Other features include RS SV suspension from Fox Racing, Brembo brakes, and HRE wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

The interior of Octavia appears more luxurious compared to the original model setup.

It showcases a blend of performance, luxury, modernity, and classic DBS elements contributed by the use of leather upholstery, along with carbon fiber, bronze, and billet aluminum materials.

According to Jim Ring, co-owner of Ringbrothers, “Octavia is a combination of imagination and the latest design process.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What would an MI6 agent drive while on holiday?’ This is the result,” he added.

Ruf Rodeo: more than just a modified 911 for off-roading

Approximately five years after the introduction of the concept model, Ruf has officially revealed the production version of the Rodeo during Monterey Car Week.

This is not merely a modified Porsche 911 for off-road driving.

The Ruf Rodeo features a specially designed carbon fiber monocoque chassis, complemented by bash bar components integrated directly into the front and rear bumpers.

With a wider track of 41 mm at the front and 142 mm at the rear, Ruf has paired it with wider fender flares compared to the SCR model.

For off-road driving, the Rodeo is equipped with pushrod coilovers complete with active dampers, allowing for a ground clearance of up to 242 mm.

All four wheel corners come fitted with 18-inch rims, Goodyear all-terrain tires, a carbon ceramic brake system consisting of six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear, along with 350 mm brake rotors.

This is the modern version of the legendary McLaren F1: only five units exist worldwide

Twenty-seven years after the production of the legendary McLaren F1 ceased, its former designer, Gordon Murray, has introduced a modern incarnation named the S1 LM and Le Mans GTR.

These new models are produced by Gordon Murray Special Vehicles (GMSV), a new branch of Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA).

S1 LM

This vehicle is built on the T.50 chassis but features an overall design inspired by the McLaren F1.

At first glance, one might mistake it for a restored McLaren F1, thanks to its design.

For instance, the shape of the headlights at both the front and rear is nearly identical, yet presented with a more contemporary approach.

There are air vents behind the front wheel arches, a large rear wing, five-spoke rims, and a roof air scoop—all of which draw inspiration from the original model.

The cabin layout is also inspired by the original McLaren F1 cockpit, featuring a central driver seat with two passenger seats on either side.

Additionally, headphones are provided, likely intended to protect the hearing of the driver during operation.

In terms of power, the S1 LM is equipped with a 4.3-liter V12 engine producing over 700 hp, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

According to GMA, the S1 LM is a track-oriented vehicle with a stiffer suspension setup compared to the T.50 model.

Only five units of the S1 LM have been produced, all purchased by a very wealthy customer at an undisclosed price.

Le Mans GTR

Another new model emerging from the T50 chassis is the Le Mans GTR.

Unlike the S1 LM, the Le Mans GTR is a direct tribute to the F1 GTR Longtail and several other racing vehicles, including the Porsche 917 and Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3.

The mechanical specifications of the Le Mans GTR are more aligned with those of the T.50 and T.50S, featuring a 4.0-liter V12 engine that generates 654 hp, a manual transmission, and a three-seat cabin layout.

It also does not require a rear fan due to its long-tail structure, which contributes to the necessary aerodynamic efficiency.

Only 24 units of the Le Mans GTR will be produced by GMA, but unfortunately, all units are already sold out.

Set to be launched soon, the Jaecoo J5 is estimated to be priced around RM120,000.

Will this new Jaecoo model be able to compete with other sub-compact SUV models?

Tesla China launches Model Y L and turn signal stalk for Model 3 Highland

Vehicles with a longer wheelbase, especially sedans, have become a popular choice in mainland China.

It’s not surprising that even a compact car like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class has a long-wheelbase variant there.

Tesla has adopted a similar approach, introducing a new model, the Model Y L, which features a three-row seating configuration.

True to the addition of the letter “L”, the Model Y L is 179 mm longer and 44 mm taller than the standard model.

These changes result in the new Tesla Model Y L measuring 4,976 mm in length, 2,129 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height.

The wheelbase also increased by 149 mm, from 2,891 mm to 3,040 mm.

These dimensional enhancements affect several aspects, including longer rear passenger doors and a redesigned mirror housing.

Additionally, the Model Y L comes with unique 19-inch rims and a more pronounced rear spoiler.

Inside the cabin, the original center screen has been replaced with a 16-inch display, and features include temperature controls for the second-row captain’s chairs, heated seats for the third row, a panoramic glass roof, an 18-speaker audio system, and an 8-inch rear screen.

When the second and third-row seats are folded down, it provides a cargo space of 2,539 liters, which is 401 liters larger than the standard Model Y.

Equipped with dual electric motors, the Tesla Model Y L can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the existing offerings.

This is attributed to the longer dimensions, which add 96 kg to the weight, bringing the total to 2,088 kg.

To accommodate the increased weight, the suspension has been upgraded for more precise and smooth driving control.

The NMC 82 kWh battery pack allows for a driving range of 751 km on a full charge.

In the Chinese market, the Tesla Model Y L is priced starting at RMB 339,000 (approximately RM 235,000).

In a separate development, Tesla China has reintroduced the physical turn signal stalk for all variants of the Model 3 Highland.

Owners of existing Model 3 Highland vehicles can obtain the stalk package through the online store for RMB 2,499 (approximately RM 1,470).

Installation of this accessory can only be done at Tesla Service Centers, where technicians will use special tools to install the component.

Such accessories have already been offered by third parties, such as Enhance Auto through their S3XY Stalks product, which provides a solution for owners seeking traditional driving controls in their electric vehicles.

Lexus Sport Concept: is this the true LFA’s successor?

Last week at the Monterey Car Week, Lexus took the opportunity to showcase its next-generation sports car for the first time.

Named the Lexus Sport Concept, it represents an evolution of the Electrified Sport Concept that debuted in late 2021.

In comparison to its predecessor, the Sport Concept boasts a design that is more suited for actual production.

In addition to the typical modern Lexus design elements, this Sport Concept also draws inspiration from the V10 Lexus LFA supercar, particularly noticeable on the C-pillar, with air vents at the rear bumper and an active rear spoiler.

At this time, Lexus is still keeping the full specifications of the Sport Concept under wraps.

However, upon closer inspection, the Lexus Sport Concept features exhaust outlets cleverly concealed beneath the active spoiler.

Reports suggest that the Sport Concept will be equipped with a twin-turbo V8 engine configuration with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) layout, along with hybrid system assistance.

Why a V8 engine? This is based on a test unit, heavily masked, that was spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring a few months ago.

So, could the Sport Concept truly be the rightful successor to the Lexus LFA?
