However, it is unfortunate that some previously available features, like Nappa leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof have been removed.

The 2026 Proton X70 Premium variant continues to feature the original 19-inch wheel design, although the Continental UC6 tires have been replaced with Giti Comfort F50 tires (225/55R19).

The selling price (after RM7,000 rebate for the first 1,500 units, valid until March 31) starts from RM99,800 for the Executive variant to RM112,800 for the Premium variant.

The last unit of the Proton Saga was reported to roll off the production line on September 30, 2025.

Manufacturing operations have now been fully relocated to Tanjong Malim, where a total of 1,400 production staff have already moved.

A special celebration event was recently held at Proton Tanjong Malim to honor the 1,400 workers and was officiated by Ainol Azmil, Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer, along with the senior management team of PROTON.

Production of the Saga model will continue in Tanjong Malim along with the Persona model, the X series SUVs, and the S70 sedan at the high-tech manufacturing hub AHTV, which also houses Proton’s new energy vehicle (NEV) assembly plant.

The Tanjong Malim facility has an annual production capacity of 250,000 units and consists of five main production divisions: Engine and Transmission Machining, Pressing, Body Assembly, Painting, and Final Assembly.

The Proton Shah Alam plant has been in operation since 1985, covering an area of approximately 83.48 hectares with an investment of RM370 million.

In addition to housing a research and development (R&D) center, it is also equipped with comprehensive testing facilities, including a semi-high-speed test track.

Throughout its operational period, the plant has produced over 4 million units of vehicles, including the iconic models Saga, Wira, Perdana, and Exora.

PMX inaugurates Proton’s EV factory in Tanjung Malim; CKD e.MAS 7 commences

Proton has officially launched its electric vehicle (EV) production facility located in the Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV) of Tanjung Malim.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and was also attended by the Chief Minister of Perak, Dato’ Seri Saarani Mohamad; the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke Siew Fook; and the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

With operations commencing this month, the EV factory will serve as an assembly site for various models from the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform.

The first model to be assembled at this factory will be the Proton e.MAS 7 electric SUV, followed by the Proton e.MAS 5 in due course.

Initially, the factory will have a production capacity of up to 20,000 units per year, with the ability to scale up to 45,000 units per year depending on domestic and international demand.

This factory is also expected to generate over 200 job opportunities for the local community.

Proton’s EV factory to start production this September, creating 200 job opportunities

Proton’s electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim is nearing completion and is set to begin operations this September.

Within six months of the groundbreaking ceremony held in February, the construction of this facility has reached 90.4%, with equipment installation at 83.5%, resulting in an overall project progress of 86.9%.

The factory will be used for assembling various models from the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform, starting with the Proton e.MAS 7, followed by the e.MAS 5.

With an initial production capacity of 20,000 units per year, the facility can expand to accommodate up to 45,000 units in line with the growth of domestic and international demand.

To facilitate this, each production line can be enhanced with several stations featuring a modular testing line capable of supporting platform variations or the production of multiple model types.

Logistics, utilities, storage systems, and digital traceability tools have also been optimized to support scaling for various models for both local and export markets.

Unlike the existing factory, this EV production facility has a new layout specifically designed for battery assembly, high-voltage safety measures, and electrical testing processes.

Proton is also training 30 non-executive workers with Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) and diploma backgrounds before the full-scale production begins this September.

This EV factory is expected to generate over 200 new job opportunities for the local community, particularly in the fields of EV industrialization and technical services.

Additionally, Proton is collaborating strategically with Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS) to strengthen local talent, where Proton contributes technical syllabus input and supports internship initiatives.

Geely, as Proton’s partner, provides technical guidance on the production systems, assists in equipment selection, and positions experts to support installation and trial testing.

Furthermore, Geely facilitates overseas training for Proton staff to ensure the new facility meets global EV manufacturing standards.

According to Wan Yousry bin Mohamed, Chief Manufacturing Engineer at PROTON, “This factory represents PROTON’s transformation and our unwavering commitment to a sustainable, high-tech future.

“We are also laying the groundwork for Malaysia’s leadership in the regional EV landscape by strategically expanding our EV offerings into new international markets. This is a monumental step for both the company and the country, and we are excited to see the first Malaysian-made EV roll off the production line and onto our roads,” he added.

Proton and RCM join forces to clean up Morib Beach

Proton has partnered with Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) to launch a beach cleanup campaign at Morib Beach as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

This effort marks the second consecutive year Proton has returned to the renowned coastal area, known for its valuable marine and mangrove ecosystems.

The latest campaign brought together 157 volunteers, including Proton staff, vendors, dealers, and bank representatives.

The main focus was on areas popular with visitors, where a total of 468.27 kg of waste was successfully collected, including cans/metal, plastic, and glass.

The cleanup activities also removed plastic straws and cigarette butts, both of which have a significant impact on the natural beauty of the beach.

In addition to improving the quality of the beach, this activity raises awareness about the importance of coastal preservation and the role of mangrove ecosystems in environmental conservation.

It also provides participants with insights into personal actions they can take to reduce waste.

Ainol Azmil, Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Proton, stated, “This collaboration at Morib Beach truly reflects Proton’s spirit.

“By participating in community work, we are not only contributing to a healthier environment but also strengthening our spirit of cooperation and responsibility. In moments like these, our core values—Teamwork, Achiever, Respect, and Integrity (TARI)—come to life.”

Proton establishes export company to expand global footprint

Proton Holdings Berhad has announced the establishment of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), to spearhead efforts in expanding its international market presence.

Enmund Lim Meng, the former Director of Proton’s International Sales Division, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the new company.

PICSB will be responsible for expanding Proton’s export markets, with an aim to grow into global southern countries while overseeing and developing sales and marketing efforts in existing markets.

For the entirety of 2025, PICSB aims to achieve export sales reaching 6,000 units, with a target to exceed ten times that number by 2030.

Currently, Proton has exported 20,169 vehicles to 19 countries, including South Africa, Angola, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Brunei, Fiji, Ghana, Iraq, Kenya, Mauritius, Egypt, Mozambique, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Trinidad & Tobago.

The top three Proton models in terms of export units since 2020 are the Proton Saga (10,998 units), Proton X50 (3,968 units), and Proton X70 (3,316 units).

The warm reception for the Proton e.MAS 7 has propelled its sales figures, making it the third highest-selling model in exports this year.

Since the commencement of export activities to Nepal and Trinidad & Tobago, a total of 233 units have been shipped as of December 2024.

This model has maintained strong sales, with 916 units sold in May alone for both domestic and international markets, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) total sales to 3,632 units.

In a brief historical note, Proton began exporting to the Bangladeshi market in 1986, a year after its first car was launched.

By 1992, Proton had become the fastest-growing new car franchise in the UK, with annual sales reaching 15,000 units.

By the early 2000s, Proton models were present in 64 countries worldwide.

Proton records sales of 11,069 units in June 2025

In June 2025, Proton reported total sales of 11,069 units, bringing its year-to-date (YTD) sales figure to 72,156 units.

This positions Proton as the second-largest brand in the industry, despite a 21 percent decline in total industry volume (TIV) to 53,500 units compared to 68,007 units in May.

Proton’s market share for June is estimated at 20.7 percent, reflecting an increase of 1.1 percent compared to the previous month and up 1.2 percent from the YTD figure of 19.5 percent.

According to Proton, the decline in automotive sales in June was influenced by external factors such as increased tensions in the Middle East and the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), which negatively affected buyer sentiment.

So far, the Proton Saga continues to top the chart as Proton’s best-selling car with 5,206 units sold, followed by the Proton X50 (1,657 units), Proton S70 (1,402 units), Proton Persona (1,171 units), Proton X70 (533 units), Proton Iriz (288 units), and Proton X90 (174 units).

Meanwhile, the only EV model, the Proton e.MAS 7, concluded the first half of 2025 with 4,253 units sold in the domestic and export markets, achieving a 24 percent market share.

Proton’s vehicle exports surged by 56.8 percent to 414 units in June 2025 compared to June 2024, resulting in a total export figure for the first half of the year that increased by 39.9 percent to 2,250 units.

Proton anticipates that these figures will continue to rise as the Proton e.MAS 7 model is introduced in more countries in the future.

Returning to the local market, Proton is expected to launch the facelifted X50 model this July, featuring changes in design, engine specifications, and enhancements to the ADAS 2.0 system.

“With high-tech components becoming increasingly important in our models, it is essential for PROTON to bring the development and production of these components into the local ecosystem. This is not only for cost reduction but also to enhance the capabilities of our R&D team and vendors.

These joint venture and technical agreements reflect our long-term commitment to manufacturing vehicles in Malaysia while making the country an automotive hub by contributing to the realization of the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) led by the company’s shareholders,” said Wang Huaibing, Chief Procurement Officer of PROTON.
