Proton S70 selected as new national taxi under Teksi Madani programme

Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently launched the National Teksi Madani Renewal Programme at Dataran Merdeka.

The launch marked the beginning of a national initiative to renew and strengthen the nation’s taxi industry. It follows the earlier announcement of a 100% excise duty and sales tax exemption for taxi and private hire car owners purchasing new locally manufactured vehicles. The initiative aims to reduce the cost burden of new vehicle ownership and accelerate the nationwide renewal of the taxi fleet.

Additionally, the programme offers taxi drivers the opportunity to transition to vehicles that are more modern, safer, more comfortable, and of higher quality. At the same time, an additional allocation of RM10 million was announced for a matching grant programme to replace old vehicles with new ones.

Proton S70: The New Face of National Taxis

The Proton S70 was selected for its features that meet the operational requirements of public mobility, including a spacious cabin, a fuel-efficient engine, and smart connectivity technology. Furthermore, owners need not worry as there is an extensive network of Proton service centres across the nation.

Under the programme, eligible operators will be offered the Proton S70 Premium in an exclusive Ruby Red colour, replacing the traditional two-tone red-and-white livery. The sedan will also be fitted with the necessary additional hardware, including:

  • an LED panel displaying green Teksi/E-Hailing lettering
  • an additional meter display for transactions and advertisements
  • a special GET registration number (red lettering on a white background)
  • a unique decal on the C-pillars

Furthermore, the new S70 taxis will no longer feature the conventional roof-mounted taxi topper or operator labels on the doors.

Specifications

One of the major changes made to the S70 is the new 1.5-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine, which replaces the original 3-cylinder engine.

This new engine produces a power output of 181 PS and 290 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

The 0-100 km/h acceleration time is now just 7.5 seconds, with a fuel consumption rate of only 5.7 liters per 100 km.

In terms of exterior design, the S70 features revised headlights, daytime running lights (DRL), and 17-inch alloy wheels.

There is also an aerodynamic kit for a more stylish appearance.

The cabin is equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen that now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The S70 comes with 13 Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features, which include functions such as:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA)
  • Rear Traffic Cross Alert (RCTA)

Since its launch, the Proton S70 has sold over 38,000 units.

Proton records sales of 11,069 units in June 2025

In June 2025, Proton reported total sales of 11,069 units, bringing its year-to-date (YTD) sales figure to 72,156 units.

This positions Proton as the second-largest brand in the industry, despite a 21 percent decline in total industry volume (TIV) to 53,500 units compared to 68,007 units in May.

Proton’s market share for June is estimated at 20.7 percent, reflecting an increase of 1.1 percent compared to the previous month and up 1.2 percent from the YTD figure of 19.5 percent.

According to Proton, the decline in automotive sales in June was influenced by external factors such as increased tensions in the Middle East and the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), which negatively affected buyer sentiment.

So far, the Proton Saga continues to top the chart as Proton’s best-selling car with 5,206 units sold, followed by the Proton X50 (1,657 units), Proton S70 (1,402 units), Proton Persona (1,171 units), Proton X70 (533 units), Proton Iriz (288 units), and Proton X90 (174 units).

Meanwhile, the only EV model, the Proton e.MAS 7, concluded the first half of 2025 with 4,253 units sold in the domestic and export markets, achieving a 24 percent market share.

Proton’s vehicle exports surged by 56.8 percent to 414 units in June 2025 compared to June 2024, resulting in a total export figure for the first half of the year that increased by 39.9 percent to 2,250 units.

Proton anticipates that these figures will continue to rise as the Proton e.MAS 7 model is introduced in more countries in the future.

Returning to the local market, Proton is expected to launch the facelifted X50 model this July, featuring changes in design, engine specifications, and enhancements to the ADAS 2.0 system.

Proton offers more car model options for Grab drivers

Proton continues to expand its strategic partnership with Grab Malaysia by introducing more car model options to meet the needs of drivers on this e-hailing platform.

This collaboration follows the success of the previous campaign, “Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners,” which was launched in November 2024.

Apart from the Proton Saga, Grab driver partners can choose to acquire the Proton S70 sedan and the premium model range of the X Series (Proton X50, Proton X70, and Proton X90), tailored under the GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-seater) categories.

This collaboration also offers attractive incentives, such as cash rebates of up to RM13,000, as well as a 5 percent service discount for the first two years or up to 40,000 km.

It also provides petrol support worth RM500 to ease initial ownership operating costs.

Ong Chee Wooi, Deputy Sales Director of Proton EDAR, stated, “This strengthened collaboration with Grab Malaysia is an important step in reinforcing the e-hailing sector. PROTON is pleased to offer the S70 model and the premium X series to Grab driver partners.

“For gig workers, this comprehensive program not only provides exclusive advantages but also guarantees reliability and affordable maintenance – crucial factors for those who use their vehicles as the primary tool for earning a living.”

Rashid Shukor, Director of Country Operations and Mobility at Grab Malaysia, said, “We are pleased to strengthen our collaboration with PROTON, which reflects our ongoing commitment to providing flexible opportunities for Malaysians.

“This initiative has made it easier for our driver partners to acquire vehicles, enabling them to generate income and support their families while meeting the growing demand from passengers.

“With the expansion of this collaboration – including the S70 model and the premium X series – driver partners now have the opportunity to enhance their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and meet the diverse needs of customers. We hope to continue moving forward together in building a future that is more inclusive and full of opportunities for all.”

Proton sales increase by 13.6 percent in October, Saga remains best-selling model

In October, Proton recorded sales of 12,799 units for both domestic and export markets, marking a 13.6 percent increase compared to the previous month.

This brings Proton’s year-to-date (YTD) sales total to 125,557 units, placing the national car brand second in the country’s automotive sales rankings.

Among the total sales, the Proton Saga remains a popular choice among buyers, with 6,112 units sold, bringing its YTD total to 60,178 units.

Proton is also hopeful that the Saga’s sales will surpass 70,000 units for the second consecutive year this year.

Although the Saga did not lead its segment, three other Proton models maintained top positions in their respective segments.

The Proton X50 emerged as the best-selling SUV in the B segment last month, with 2,122 units sold, while the Proton S70 returned to the top as the best-selling C segment sedan with sales of 1,432 units.

Proton’s flagship model, the X90, continued to lead sales in the D segment SUV category, recording a total of 245 units sold last month.
