2027 Toyota GRMN Corolla: A more hardcore hot hatch to conquer Nurburgring

Four years after the introduction of the Toyota GR Corolla, a more hardcore version is now available in the form of the GRMN Corolla.

Like previous GRMN models, the development of the GRMN Corolla focused on the Nurburgring circuit, incorporating experiences drawn from motorsport involvement.

It features a stiffer chassis, increased power, a more extreme body kit, and most importantly, it now accommodates only two passengers.

More Aerodynamic

The standard GR Corolla already has a stiffer chassis structure, thanks to the addition of adhesive structures totaling 13.9 meters to 32.7 meters.

The GRMN version builds on this foundation and adds aerodynamic components for high-speed driving, such as engine hood vents, fender vents, and a front spoiler.

Additionally, the carbon fiber rear wing includes a manual adjustment mechanism with 1-degree increments across five settings.

Exclusive Suspension Tuning

This hot hatch also comes equipped with specially tuned suspension for better grip when cornering at high speeds.

Each component has been adjusted down to the millimeter to ensure optimal balance.

Driving dynamics are further enhanced by the use of wider Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which are 10 mm larger than those on the standard GR Corolla.

Finally, the GRMN Corolla is equipped with a recalibrated EPS steering system and GR-Four drivetrain for improved driving stability.

More Powerful Engine

In addition to its chassis and handling improvements, Toyota has upgraded the existing engine to produce an impressive 300 hp and 415 Nm of torque!

These figures are attainable thanks to involvement in the Super Taikyu Series through the GR Corolla, which is paired with a hydrogen-powered engine.

To maintain performance stability, the GRMN Corolla is also equipped with an additional intercooler spray system.

Currently, the GRMN Corolla is exclusively offered with a 6-speed manual transmission (iMT).

Lighter Weight

As part of its weight reduction package, Toyota has removed the rear seats.

As a result, the GRMN Corolla is 30 kg lighter than the GR Corolla, contributing to a better power-to-weight ratio.

Driver-Friendly Cockpit

To enhance driver focus, the GRMN Corolla comes with several exclusive features.

These include a full bucket driver’s seat based on the position of Super Taikyu Series racers, constructed from GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer).

The cabin of the GRMN Corolla adopts a darker color scheme, complemented by carbon fiber accents.

Finally, the GRMN logo is embroidered on the headrests, with Alumite Red trim on the door and gear shift, along with Morizo’s signature on the dashboard and the GRMN serial number plaque.

Limited Production for Three Countries Only

Unfortunately, the GRMN Corolla will be produced in limited units.

It will not be widely available, as it is designated exclusively for the Japanese, North American, and Australian markets.

GR Corolla Morizo RR

Not stopping at the GRMN Corolla, Toyota is also developing another GR Corolla variant under the Morizo RR label.

While the GRMN Corolla comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, the GR Corolla Morizo RR is specifically designed with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

More importantly, it retains the five-seat configuration despite its extreme exterior appearance.

2026 Toyota GR Yaris gets a new steering wheel design

Since its introduction in 2020, the Toyota GR Yaris has undergone significant changes both inside and out.

Following the launch of the facelift version in 2024, Toyota has now announced the ‘Type 26’ model.

Similar to its predecessors, the new version features enhancements drawn from experiences in motorsport.

New GR Steering Wheel

Among the notable changes in the 2026 GR Yaris is a completely redesigned steering wheel aimed at ensuring better control.

Due to the switch placement on the previous steering wheel, some drivers complained about their inability to position their hands in the ideal location.

With input from professional racers, Toyota developed a prototype steering unit and tested it on actual race tracks.

As a result, the steering wheel now features a smaller diameter for improved responsiveness, along with a left and right grip design that is more comfortable when navigating corners.

The switch layout on the steering wheel is now individually positioned for easier operation, enhanced by ring lighting for better visibility at night.

Additionally, the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system has been recalibrated for more precise and consistent handling in various driving conditions.

New High-Performance Tires

The Toyota GR Yaris trim RZ High Performance + Aero Performance Package and the RZ High Performance trim now come standard with Bridgestone Potenza Race tires.

These newly developed tires offer a revised tread pattern, internal structure, and rubber compound.

They have also undergone rigorous testing to deliver high grip performance over extended periods.

The optimized damping characteristics at the front and rear axles contribute to maximum tire performance.

Added Features: Heated Steering Wheel and Seats

Customers of the 2026 Toyota GR Yaris can now opt for a heated steering wheel and seats by choosing the vertical parking brake option along with the Navigation Package or Comfort Package.

The Toyota GR Yaris continues to feature the G16E-GTS engine, capable of generating 304 PS at 6,500 rpm and a torque of 400 Nm at 3,250-4,600 rpm.

This hot hatch can be paired with a 6-speed iMT transmission or an 8-speed Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT).

The selling price of the Toyota GR Yaris starts at 3,617,200 yen (approximately RM89,255) for the RC iMT version and goes up to 5,882,200 yen (approximately RM145,144) for the RZ High Performance + Aero Performance Package with DAT.

Toyota Gazoo Racing unveils Aero Performance package for GR Yaris

Do you think that with the power upgrade and automatic transmission offering, the Toyota GR Yaris is already perfect?

It seems your assumption is completely wrong, once again!

Officials at Toyota Gazoo Racing still see room for improvement in this model with the introduction of the “Aero Performance” package for the GR Yaris.

Developed through extensive racing experience and input from professional drivers, this latest package can maximize the aerodynamic performance and cooling aspects of the hot hatch.

The Aero Performance package includes six components, five of which are designed to enhance stability at high speeds and aerodynamic performance, such as the front fender vents, fuel tank undertray, rear bumper vents, and adjustable rear wing.

The addition of the front lip spoiler is based on feedback from professional racer Oshima to reduce front lift, thereby improving the aerodynamic balance of the vehicle.

Cooling is addressed by an aluminum engine hood with vents, sharing the same design as the carbon fiber hood used in the GRMN Yaris model.

The basic specifications of the GR Yaris remain unchanged, featuring the G16E-GTS engine that generates 304 PS and 400 Nm of torque, with a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed DAT transmission and the GR-Four all-wheel drive system.

In Japan, the Toyota GR Yaris with the Aero Performance package is priced starting at 4,055,000 yen (approximately RM115,911).

Honda admits that the Civic Type R EV project is not easy

In recent years, rumors have circulated that the Civic Type R FL5 will be the last pure internal combustion engine (ICE) hot hatch model from Honda.

What is the future of the Civic Type R? Will it become an electric-powered hot hatch?

The unfortunate news is that Honda is indeed exploring the process of creating an EV Type R.

However, this process is not as simple as Toshihiro Akiwa, head of Honda’s BEV development unit, admitted when unveiling two 0 Series prototypes at CES Las Vegas this month.

“An electric motor and battery have different characteristics, so we cannot produce something that is the same as before.

“As an EV, how can we offer the joy of driving? Of course, we have not given up, but it is not just about sheer power. It’s about sound, vibrations, acceleration, and human experience.

“All of these are part of the joy of driving,” he added.

While showcasing the large sedan and mid-size SUV prototypes, Honda has no plans to offer the 0 Series EV, even though the electric motor setup can achieve around 480 hp.

For comparison, the Honda Civic Type R FL5 is a pure ICE hot hatch with a 2.0-liter turbo engine capable of generating up to 329 hp.

If you were given enough money to buy a Honda Civic Type R FL5, would you choose that model?

Or are you actually more inclined to acquire a classic Type R model – like this Civic Type R EK9?

The bidding website Bring A Trailer has listed a Honda Civic Type R hatchback of the EK9 generation that was imported into the United States last year.

It features the iconic Championship White color and has only a mileage of around 53,000 km!

Unlike most owners, this Civic Type R EK9 retains its original specifications as it came out of the factory in 1998.

The original 15-inch rims are still present, though they are now wrapped in Hankook Ventus V2 Concept2 tires.

The cabin space also still retains the Recaro sport seats upholstered in red fabric and microfiber, along with red carpeting and a Momo steering wheel.

When new, the original inline-four B16B 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine could produce a power output of up to 182 hp and 160 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.

As of the time this article was written, the bidding price for this EK9 has already reached US$42,000 (RM189,000), nearly matching the selling price of the FL5 Type R in the United States, which starts at US$46,690 (RM210,152)

Do you like the original VTEC roar or the power delivery from the much more modern and powerful VTEC turbo?

It’s up to your personal preference.

Renault 5 Turbo 3E – electric hot hatch with 500 hp!

Three years after the concept model was introduced, Renault has finally unveiled the actual production version of the R5 Turbo 3E, which will be available for purchase by the public.

With its lightweight platform and powerful electric motors, the R5 Turbo 3E promises acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds.

In terms of exterior design, the R5 Turbo 3E incorporates elements inspired by the classic R5 Turbo I and II rally cars from the 1980s, featuring angular wide fender flares and a more aggressive rear bumper.

The LED headlights present a more streamlined appearance, reminiscent of the classic R5 lights but modernized, while the LED taillights are borrowed from the R5 E-Tech model.

The R5 Turbo 3E is expected to enter production in 2026, likely in very limited quantities, with a selling price expected to exceed £100,000 (RM563,000).

Toyota believes majority of buyers will choose manual GR Corolla over automatic

For those who missed the boat, Toyota has previously updated the offering of the hot hatch 2025 GR Corolla model by adding the option of an 8-speed automatic transmission as an alternative to the manual transmission model.

The trend of transitioning to automatic models, which we commonly witnessed before, seems to have difficulty in infecting the GR Corolla enthusiasts.

According to CarBuzz report, Toyota expects that 80 percent of buyers will choose the manual GR Corolla model, while the rest will opt for the Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT) equipped model.

This proves that the GR Corolla buyers are a group of enthusiasts who still yearn for a driving experience as pure as possible.

There are some differences between the existing auto transmission in the GR Corolla compared to the GR Supra and GR86 models.

According to Toyota, the GR Corolla gearbox will use input from the brake pedal and throttle to calculate the optimum time for gear changes.

The auto version of GR Corolla also now comes with a launch control function that is not available in the manual model.

Varis parts can make your GR Corolla look more aggressive

If you have the option to get a powerful and family-friendly hot hatch, the GR Corolla may very well be a suitable candidate.

Easy-to-control power, paired with a delightful clutch match, balanced suspension tuning, and most importantly an already aggressive appearance.

However, for a few owners who desire a more aggressive appearance for their GR Corolla, there is a solution offered by the leading tuner, Varis.

Starting from the front, Varis has developed a carbon fiber splitter priced at $1,695(RM7,984) for a fiercer look, followed by set of front turbulators priced at $645 (RM3,038) aimed at reducing drag and increasing downforce.

The side can be enhanced by the presence of a pair of carbon fiber side skirts priced at $2,295 (RM10,811), followed by the installation of carbon fiber rear diffuser at $845 (RM3,980), exhaust heat shield at $335 (RM1,578), and rear exhaust pipe protector priced at $695 (RM3,274).

Want a more aggressive look? Simply order a adjustable carbon fiber rear wing priced at $1,895 (RM8,926) and carbon fiber engine hood priced at $2,995 (RM14,108), but both components will take about 8 months to reach the customer’s hands.

As of now, Varis does not offer any mechanical modifications, meaning owners can still enjoy the standard 300 hp and 400 Nm torque from the G16E-GTS engine that powers all wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

Toyota is updating the 2024 GR Corolla with aluminum tapes

A car often undergoes subtle unadvertised changes throughout its sale period. Manufacturers may alter fastening shapes, improve potentially damaged components, or seek ways to reduce costs.

For the 2024 Toyota GR Corolla, there are few changes, including new bolts, a pair of air ducts, and four pieces of aluminum tape for improved aerodynamics.

We are particularly interested in the latter, the aluminum tape. How can such a simple, light, and inexpensive item have an impact on aerodynamics?

In a video released by Ken Gushi, showcasing the installation of 2024 components on his 2023 GR Corolla, the adhesive tape is seen as a curious upgrade for him as well.

The tape comes in the 2024 upgrade package alongside new rear subframe bolts, new steering bolts, air ducts, and the aforementioned tape. One might expect the tape to help seal air gaps or reinforce flexible parts, but instead, it controls electrostatic discharge.

This concept has since been patented by Toyota. The car generates positive charges while driving, and the surrounding air is also charged. When two positively charged objects touch, the air around them is disturbed.

According to Car Watch, this idea has been around since the mid-2010s and was initially tested on the Toyota 86. During the development of the 86 facelift model, Toyota engineers identified inconsistent behaviors among test car units, especially when the front bumper material was changed from prototype specifications to production specifications.

This led to the study of electrostatic discharge and the discovery that aluminum tape solved this issue and seemingly improved aerodynamics like magic
