Perodua plans local assembly for Ativa Hybrid in Malaysia

Perodua is planning to transition the Ativa Hybrid to local production (CKD), according to a report by Bernama.

Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President and CEO of Perodua, stated that the company is currently finalizing discussions regarding the production timeline, pricing structures, and other essential details.

“Once these matters are finalized, we will make an official announcement. What is certain is that the Ativa Hybrid model will be manufactured locally,” he said during a press conference held during the recent visit of the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Noriyuki Shikata to the Perodua manufacturing facility.

It is understood that Perodua has received an investment of 1.5 billion yen (approximately RM37 million) from the Global South Fund to support the implementation of Japanese hybrid technology within the country.

The Perodua Ativa was officially launched in 2021 as the brand’s first model built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. Currently, the Ativa is exclusively offered with a 1.0-liter 1KR-VET turbocharged engine paired with a D-CVT transmission.

The Ativa Hybrid utilizes a series hybrid powertrain system, where the electric motor is solely responsible for driving the wheels. In this configuration, the 1.2-liter WA-VEX engine acts strictly as a generator to charge the battery and power the electric motor.

Its Japanese counterpart, the Daihatsu Rocky Hybrid, features the e-Smart Hybrid system which consists of:

  • Engine: 1.2-liter WA-VEX three-cylinder (102 hp / 105 Nm)

SAIC Motor Malaysia announces plan to assemble MG’s first EV in Melaka, starting in 2026

SAIC Motor Malaysia today announced plans to begin local assembly of MG vehicles in Malaysia in the first quarter of 2026, marking a significant milestone in bringing MG products closer to local customers while strengthening the brand’s regional growth.

The announcement was made by Mr Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, in the presence of YBhg Datuk Dr Aminar Rashid, Chairman of the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), and YBhg En. Hamidon Bin Abdullah, Executive Chairman of EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB), during a special event attended by partners, media, and key industry stakeholders.

“This remarkable journey would not have been possible without the support of our dealers, business partners, media, and colleagues,” said Emory Qi. “Local assembly will be a key milestone that brings us closer to customers while reinforcing our role as a regional hub for MG.”

As part of its commitment to accelerate localisation, SAIC Motor Malaysia will begin local assembly in partnership with EPMB in Melaka. The Melaka facility will be capable of assembling green energy vehicles including BEV and HEV, as well as internal combustion engine (ICE) models under one roof. The strategy focuses on three priorities: affordability, faster delivery, and stronger localisation, aligning with SAIC Motor’s vision of a green energy vehicle roadmap presented at Auto Shanghai 2025.

“We are pleased to partner with SAIC Motor – our second state-owned OEM partner – to assemble the MG models in Malaysia. One will be the first electric vehicle locally assembled at our Melaka plant. Through collaboration with local suppliers, we will accelerate localization, including battery pack assembly for MG vehicles, enhancing our value proposition and better serving the Malaysian market”, said En Hamidon Abdullah, Executive Chairman of EPMB.

“Our assembly line will fully meet customer demand, ensuring a smoother and faster ownership experience,” Emory added. “Most importantly, quality is non-negotiable. Every locally assembled vehicle will undergo stringent global-level inspections through SAIC’s Quality Sustenance Programme.”

SAIC Motor Malaysia highlighted several factors that make Malaysia the ideal location for local assembly. The 50-year friendship between Malaysia and China provides a strong foundation of trust and collaboration, while Malaysia’s strategic location within ASEAN positions it as a natural hub for regional distribution and growth. Beyond vehicle assembly, the investment will create jobs, strengthen the vendor ecosystem, and lay the groundwork for future R&D development in Malaysia.

“Today’s announcement is only the beginning,” Emory concluded. “Together with our partners and local talent, we are building a future where innovation, sustainability, and opportunity drive Malaysia forward with MG.”

Since its launch just over a year ago, SAIC Motor Malaysia has expanded its network to 26 MG Motor Authorised Dealerships nationwide, including three showrooms in Sarawak, with three more on the way. Its five-model line-up now includes the all-electric MGS5 EV, reflecting the brand’s shift toward green energy vehicles. The strong reception of the MG Cyberster has also made Malaysia the best-performing market in Asia and Oceania for the brand’s iconic all-electric roadster.

This move marks the evolution of the Hyundai brand from a distribution model run by Sime Motors to a principal-based operational approach that eliminates intermediaries.

With this initiative, Hyundai will assume full responsibility for branding, marketing, sales, and direct customer experience.

A dedicated local team will be formed and empowered to make faster and more relevant decisions within the new headquarters located at Menara Affin @ TRX.

Simultaneously, HMY will introduce three new models in the SUV and MPV segments for the local market.

Hyundai will also establish a local assembly operation in Kedah starting in the third quarter of this year (Q3 2025) through a partnership with Inokom Corporation Sdn Bhd.

The facility is expected to produce up to seven vehicle models over a five-year period, integrating Malaysia into the brand’s global production network.

In the short term, Hyundai’s production operations will focus on internal combustion engine (ICE) models and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to meet Malaysian demand, with 30 percent of production expected to be exported to neighboring countries.

According to Jahabarnisa Haja Mohideen, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, “Malaysia is a highly potential market, with the highest demand for passenger vehicles in ASEAN at 35 percent.

“The stable GDP growth rate of 4.3 percent reflects strong consumer confidence and increased purchasing power. This situation will drive innovation and long-term investment.

“Through collaboration with local stakeholders, Malaysia is an ideal location to expand Hyundai’s presence and establish a key hub in Hyundai’s growth strategy in the Asia Pacific region.”

Meanwhile, Sime Motors will continue to be part of the Hyundai dealership network.

In addition, Hyundai plans to enhance its service network by opening up to 25 new branches by 2030 and upgrading its after-sales system.

Existing customers can update their information via THIS LINK to ensure HMY can provide continuous support under the new management.

Hyundai has been a well-known name in the Malaysian market since the early 2000s.

A variety of models have been introduced, covering diverse powertrains (ICE, HEV, BEV) and segments (sedan, SUV, MPV) such as the Elantra, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Ioniq Hybrid, Palisade, Santa Fe, Sonata, Starex, Staria, and Veloster.

Overall, Hyundai has recorded sales exceeding 147,862 units, demonstrating an increasing market acceptance.
