BYD Malaysia unveils BYD Mansion Macalister in Penang

Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the authorised retail partner for BYD under Sime Motors, has unveiled BYD Mansion Macalister, a distinctive new electric mobility destination in Penang.

Located along the historic Jalan Macalister, the century-old building that now houses BYD Mansion Macalister previously served as a commercial landmark in the local community, housing various businesses and offices. Through a meticulous restoration and adaptive reuse process, this heritage property has been thoughtfully transformed into Malaysia’s first BYD heritage-concept showroom.

The restoration preserves and honours the building’s distinctive architectural character while introducing a contemporary retail environment designed around the future of electric mobility. The mansion begins a new chapter as BYD Mansion Macalister, representing a synthesis of heritage architecture and modern innovation.

Set on a 26,994 sq ft parcel of land with approximately 9,000 sq ft of built-up space, the property has been reimagined as a boutique automotive destination rather than a conventional dealership. The showroom features four curated display vehicles, presented like art pieces within a gallery-like setting. This is complemented by lounge-style consultation areas and a private delivery room designed for personalised vehicle handovers.

Beyond its showroom experience, BYD Mansion Macalister also serves as a fully integrated ownership destination. The on-site service centre is equipped with five work bays, one alignment bay and three service reception bays, providing customers with convenient access to after-sales care all within one compound.

To support the growing EV ecosystem in Penang, the mansion also features an urban charging hub equipped with one 60kW DC fast charger and seven AC chargers, offering convenient charging access for electric vehicle owners.

“BYD Mansion Macalister represents an important milestone in how we continue to evolve the automotive retail experience,” said Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Motors. “By transforming a historic property into a modern electric mobility destination, we are not only preserving an important part of Penang’s architectural heritage, but also creating a meaningful space where customers can experience the future of mobility. This reflects Sime Motors’ long-term commitment to supporting the growth of electric vehicles and expanding our presence across Malaysia.”

“The opening of BYD Mansion in Macalister is a meaningful milestone for BYD in Malaysia, reflecting our continued commitment to growing the brand in ways that are closer to local communities. What makes this showroom especially significant is how it brings together premium customer experience, innovation, and uniquely Malaysian cultural touches, creating a space that not only showcases our vehicles, but also reflects the warmth, identity, and progress of the market we are proud to serve,” added Jacob Ma, Deputy General Manager of BYD Malaysia.

This launch marks another significant milestone in Sime Darby Beyond Auto’s partnership with BYD, which began in December 2022. Today, the company operates an expanding network of BYD retail and service locations across Malaysia, including Ara Damansara, TREC Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Tebrau.

Sime Darby Beyond Auto’s performance within the BYD network has also been recognised nationally. BYD Penang was recently awarded Best BYD Dealer in Malaysia for overall performance, while the group secured 13 awards out of 27 awards at this year’s BYD Dealer Conference & Awards Night, reflecting its commitment to excellence in retail and customer experience.

With the opening of BYD Mansion Macalister, Sime Darby Beyond Auto continues to expand its presence while providing customers with a distinctive gateway into electric vehicle ownership.

BYD Mansion Penang officially opens

It includes exhibition spaces capable of accommodating four BYD models, consultation areas, and private delivery rooms.

The service center contains five work bays, one alignment bay, and three service reception areas.

Additionally, there is a 60 kW DC fast charging hub and seven AC chargers to support the rapidly growing EV ecosystem.

The operations of BYD Mansion are managed by Sime Darby Beyond Auto, which is the leading BYD dealer in Malaysia.

The group also won 13 out of 27 awards at the BYD Dealer Conference & Awards Night held this year.

BYD Sime Motors expands showroom and service centre network nationwide

BYD Sime Motors continues to expand its network of sales and service centres for electric vehicles (EVs) across the country, making ownership experiences more accessible.

To date, BYD has established over 40 showrooms nationwide.

The company aims to have 34 fully operational service centres by 2026 after developing nine additional facilities.

BYD Enters Key Locations

The EV brand is also expanding its presence in several strategic locations, including Muar, Kluang, Kuala Terengganu, Sungai Petani, and Juru.

The BYD Ipoh 3S Center features the first EV charging hub in the city, equipped with 180 kW and 240 kW DC fast chargers.

Meanwhile, the BYD Sri Hartamas 3S Center is located within a shopping mall, integrating sales, service, and spare parts.

There is another manufacturer interested in boxer engines besides Porsche and Subaru

When we talk about flat or boxer engines, the names of two manufacturers typically come to mind: Porsche and Subaru.

This unique engine configuration offers benefits in terms of better vehicle handling due to its lower center of gravity compared to conventional engines.

You might not suspect that a popular name in China is also venturing into producing boxer engines.

That name is none other than BYD!

This news is quite surprising as BYD already has a family of engines for its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model lineup.

This brand-new 2.0-liter turbo boxer engine will be paired with four electric motors to power the luxury sedan Yangwang U7.

Overall, it can generate up to 1,287 hp and 1,680 Nm of torque.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h can be achieved in just 2.9 seconds, a truly impressive figure for a sedan weighing 3 tons!

Interestingly, the engine serves primarily as a range extender to charge the battery, which then supplies power to the electric motors.

However, under certain conditions, this engine can deliver 272 hp and 380 Nm of power directly to the rear axle.

With the help of this boxer engine, BYD was able to design the Yangwang U7 with a lower hood profile, giving the sedan a sportier appearance.

Additionally, the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) aspects of this sedan are significantly improved due to the reduced vibrations from the boxer engine.

With the boxer range extender, the Yangwang U7 can travel up to 966 km on a full tank and fully charged battery, while the zero-emission range can reach up to 193 km.

In China, the BYD Yangwang U7 is priced between RMB628,000 and RMB708,000 (RM367,000 to RM414,000).

Six facts you need to know about the BYD Shark 6

In conjunction with the 2025 BYD Tech Discovery event at Plaza Arkadia (November 14-16), BYD Sime Motors is showcasing the Shark 6 pickup truck for the first time.

BYD is using this model to demonstrate its Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid technology to the public.

The showcased unit is a right-hand drive (RHD) model, indicating that it may soon be officially launched in the local market.

Here are some quick facts you should know about the BYD Shark 6:

Platform

This pickup truck features a body-on-frame chassis and shares the same platform as the Fangchengbao Bao 5 (also known as Leopard 5) SUV.

The Bao 5 SUV was previously displayed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024.

Engine

The Shark 6 is not an electric-powered pickup truck; rather, it is equipped with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. The DMO Super Hybrid system consists of:

  • A 1.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine (181 hp/260 Nm)
  • Two electric motors
  • A 29.58 kWh LFP battery pack

The total power output reaches 430 hp and 650 Nm, enabling acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h.

Range

For zero-emission driving, the BYD Shark 6 offers an electric range of up to 100 km.

However, when combined with its 59-liter fuel tank, the Shark 6 can achieve a total range of 840 km according to NEDC data.

Charging

The LFP battery pack supports AC charging of up to 7 kW and DC fast charging of up to 55 kW. With this capability, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in just 25 minutes.

The Shark 6 also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality up to 6.6 kW.

Dimensions

In terms of size, the BYD Shark 6 measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. With a double-wishbone rear suspension setup, the Shark 6 provides a ground clearance of 230 mm.

Its approach angle is 31 degrees, while the departure angle measures 19 degrees. The rear cargo area has a capacity of 1,450 liters, with a payload limit of 835 kg.

Features

Based on the showcased RHD unit, exterior features include front and rear LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a charging port on the right side, and a V2L socket.

The cabin is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital cluster display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, wireless smartphone charging, and a head-up display.

BYD Seal 6 EV: a budget-friendly ‘sporty’ sedan – first drive

Sporty.

At least, that’s the characteristic BYD aims to highlight with its latest electric sedan, the BYD Seal 6, launched two months ago.

With a competitive price starting at RM100,000, the BYD Seal 6 successfully recorded sales of over 100 units in the first week following its launch.

A few weeks ago, BYD Malaysia invited us for a brief test drive to Janda Baik and Genting Highlands to experience the Premium variant of the BYD Seal 6 first-hand.

Here are our brief notes:

Dimensions and Design

The BYD Seal 6 is positioned as a C-segment sedan, significantly larger than competing models such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

Its body design is less sporty compared to the more premium Seal, reminding the author of electric sedan models from Mercedes, namely the EQE and EQS.

However, a notable advantage of the Seal 6 is its cargo capacity of 525 liters, consisting of a 460-liter trunk and a 65-liter frunk.

Additionally, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm, the Seal 6’s cabin feels spacious and comfortable, enhanced further by its flat rear floor structure.

On-Road Performance

The Premium variant we tested is equipped with a rear-wheel-drive electric motor producing 215 hp and 330 Nm of torque.

Driving is aided by MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear, tuned for Malaysian road conditions.

Acceleration feels relatively linear, with no sudden jolts that might strain the driver’s neck. With responsive throttle control, the Seal 6 can achieve desired speeds smoothly.

The suspension tuning effectively minimizes vibrations and road irregularities from disturbing passengers’ comfort.

Although it features a rear-wheel-drive setup, the Seal 6 does not exhibit a sporty character when driven aggressively.

This is due in part to the steering feel, which the author found underwhelming, and the rubber tires at all four corners, which felt less confident, especially in corners.

The benefits of the mentioned suspension tuning also diminish when driving up Genting Highlands, where the sedan can feel a bit floaty in most corners.

Cabin Experience

This sedan may not be the best choice for those seeking high-performance driving.

However, for most users, it offers more than adequate comfort.

The synthetic leather seats are sufficiently comfortable, providing ample support for the driver, with cushion dimensions that adequately support the thighs.

Rear seating is spacious and comfortable, complemented by a flat floor design.

The minimalist dashboard layout houses a 12-inch central screen that is non-rotatable but includes essential vehicle functionalities.

Importantly, it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are essential in any modern car.

There are still some physical function buttons on the center console, along with a smartphone holder that includes wireless charging capabilities.

Fortunately, the side mirror adjustment function is still maintained on the door panel.

However, it’s unfortunate that despite having advanced safety features like AEB, FCW, LDW, and a 360-degree camera, the sedan lacks blind-spot monitoring (BSM) even in higher variants.

An Alternative to C-Segment Sedans?

Yes, with a price below RM120,000, the BYD Seal 6 can be a strong alternative for those needing a spacious, comfortable, and modern sedan.

Or if you are affected by the recent Budi95 subsidy.

In any case, consider your own needs and preferences. As we have emphasized before, test drive the vehicle before making any decisions.

BYD Malaysia delivers over 100 units of the Seal 6 in one week

Just one week after the official launch, BYD Sime Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia has delivered more than 100 units of the Seal 6 electric sedan.

In addition to deliveries to showrooms across Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, the first group of customers has also started receiving their vehicles.

It is noteworthy that Malaysia is the first international market to welcome the BYD Seal 6.

With the completion of deliveries nationwide, Malaysians now have the opportunity to see, drive, and experience the driving pleasure of this C-segment electric sedan.

According to Adeline Lew, Managing Director of BYD Sime Motors, “We appreciate the smooth coordination by our team, which ensures that the BYD Seal 6 is delivered across the country without any delays.

“This is part of our ongoing effort to build customer trust while expanding access to electric mobility among Malaysians.”

With a selling price ranging from RM100,000 to RM115,800, the BYD Seal 6 is powered by a single rear-wheel-drive electric motor generating up to 215 hp and 330 Nm of torque, with a range of 485 km on a full charge.

By 2026, BYD Sime Motors plans to expand its network from 37 to 50 branches to improve access to sales, service, and charging facilities in Malaysia.

The roll-on/roll-off (RORO) vessel has the capacity to carry up to 7,000 vehicles and has set sail on its inaugural journey to destinations in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore.

After Port Klang, the ship will continue to its final stop in Thailand before returning to China.

The BYD Zhengzhou is the seventh ship in BYD’s fleet of specialized transport vessels, demonstrating the company’s strong supply chain and logistics capabilities as it seeks to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs).

Completed vehicles will be driven on and off the ship, offering time and cost benefits compared to traditional container shipments.

By operating its own fleet, BYD has greater control over critical aspects of the EV supply chain.

Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, stated, “This transport ship plays a crucial role in realizing BYD’s global aspirations and strengthening our relationship with Malaysia, which we see as a key market for our growth in the Asia-Pacific region.”

“The BYD Zhengzhou enables faster and more reliable deliveries directly to our customers here,” he added.

Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Motors for Southeast Asia, said, “With the strengthening of the regional supply chain through the BYD transport ship, we can ensure shorter delivery times, thereby enhancing our ability to provide better customer satisfaction.”

BYD Malaysia and Sime Motors continue to strengthen their cooperation to deliver EVs to Malaysians more quickly and reliably.

This initiative is supported by over 35 BYD sales centers across the country, with a target of reaching 60 sales centers by the end of 2026.

BYD’s ultra-compact EV spied undergoing testing, aiming for Japan’s kei car market

CarNewsChina reports that BYD is currently developing a prototype of a mini-sized electric vehicle with one goal: to capture Japan’s kei car market.

Although still covered in camouflage stickers, the car showcases features such as sliding rear doors, twin A-pillars, and a relatively high window glass housing structure.

This demonstrates BYD’s seriousness in creating a product that complies with the dimensional regulations set for the kei car segment in Japan.

For your information, the kei car segment is a category of ultra-compact cars in Japan, with a maximum length of 3.4 meters, a width of 1.48 meters, and a height of 2 meters.

Furthermore, engine power is limited to a maximum of 64 hp according to the agreement of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Although BYD currently offers the Seagull as its smallest EV, its size is still too large to be categorized as a kei car.

According to reports from China, BYD’s electric ‘kei car’ will be equipped with a 20 kWh battery that offers a range of about 180 km (WLTC data), along with support for fast charging at 100 kW.

BYD plans to produce this electric kei car in China for export to the Japanese market starting in late 2026, with the ambition to capture 40 percent of the electric kei car market within a few years.

Currently, the kei car market in Japan offers two EV models: the Nissan Sakura and its twin, the Mitsubishi eK X EV.

Both models were launched in 2022, equipped with a 64 hp electric motor producing 195 Nm of torque, and a 20 kWh battery pack with a driving range of up to 180 km.

BYD Atto 3 Ultra arrives in Malaysia with more kit, lower price

BYD Sime Motors has launched the Atto 3 Ultra, featuring upgraded specifications and a significantly more affordable price tag.

This latest version is priced at RM123,800, which equates to a reduction of RM26,000 compared to the 2024 model.

Furthermore, BYD Sime Motors is offering an exclusive package for the first 1,000 customers of the Atto 3 Ultra. This package includes:

  • RM5,000 cash rebate
  • 8-year service package (worth RM4,888)
  • 7 kW wall charger (worth RM3,699)
  • V2L adapter (worth RM988)
  • Type 2 cable (worth RM1,796)
  • Unlimited internet for two years

The Atto 3 Ultra comes with a comprehensive warranty package that includes a six-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000 km high-voltage battery warranty, and an eight-year/150,000 km drive unit warranty.

So, what’s new with the Atto 3 Ultra? In terms of exterior design, although it appears similar to the existing model, the Atto 3 Ultra features a new rim design. There are three colours to choose from: Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Cosmos Black.

The interior boasts all-black upholstery further accentuated by contrasting yellow stitching, replacing the previous red accents.

In terms of features, the Atto 3 Ultra introduces two new elements: a digital key (NFC) that allows the driver to unlock the doors and start the vehicle using a smartphone, and cooling features for the front seats.

There have been no changes to the powertrain. As before, the Atto 3 Ultra has a single electric motor on the front axle producing 204 PS (150 kW) and 310 Nm, along with a 60.48 kWh battery pack that offers a driving range of up to 480 km (NEDC).

BYD Atto 3 facelift gets God’s Eye intelligent driving system and more

BYD has introduced a facelifted version of the Atto 3 in China, with prices starting from 115,800 yuan (RM70,830), which is 1,000 yuan (RM610) less than the 2024 model.

Known as the Yuan Plus in its home country, this electric crossover showcases a fresher appearance with a new fascia and several upgraded features.

The dimensions of the Atto 3 remain unchanged but the facelifted model features larger trapezoidal air intakes, smoked headlights, black D-pillars, and a new roof spoiler with dual brake lights.

The interior presents a more relaxed and mature atmosphere compared to before, with two rather dull colour choices – beige and grey. The ‘guitar strings’ on the door cards are still there, but they now come in black.

Additionally, the Atto 3 now features a new column gear shifter, an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, a 12-inch head-up display, a driver monitoring camera on the A-pillar, as well as a refrigerator.

Along with a new steering wheel, the centre console of the Atto 3 has been redesigned to make room for two cup holders, several physical buttons, and a 50 W wireless charger.

The safety features and driver assistance systems of the Atto 3 have been enhanced through the use of the smart driving system God’s Eye C. It employs three cameras located at the bottom of the windscreen to enable the high-speed Navigation On Autopilot (NOA) function.

According to CarNewsChina, the system will be updated to include NOA functionality for urban driving in the future.

There are no changes to the powertrain, meaning the Atto 3 retains a single electric motor on the front axle that produces 204 PS (150 kW) and 310 Nm of torque.

In China, the LFP battery pack is available in a 49.9 kWh version with a range of 430 km, and a 60.5 kWh version that offers a range of up to 510 km. Do note that these figures are based on the rather unrealistic CLTC testing cycle.

2025 BYD Atto 3 spotted in China with new look, upgraded ADAS

The 2025 model year BYD Atto 3 has been spotted undergoing road tests in China, where it is sold as the Yuan Plus.

According to CarNewsChina, the new Atto 3 will feature an updated exterior and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). It is expected to be launched in the country around the second quarter of this year.

This is not the first time the world has seen the 2025 Atto 3 – the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China had previously revealed the full design of the electric SUV, which is why only a small portion of the car remains covered in camouflage.

As can be seen, the Atto 3 now boasts a fresher front fascia thanks to a sportier bumper design and larger trapezoidal air intakes.

The side profile showcases new chrome trim on the C-pillars and the lower body. At the rear, the bumper has been given a redesign to keep it fresh but what stands out more is the new roof spoiler that incorporates a pair of vertical brake lights.

For 2025, the Atto 3 will be available in a new shade of beige while existing colour options—including white, black, purple, blue, green, and grey—are expected to be retained.

Additionally, the new Atto 3 appears to have a new camera on the front bumper, indicating that its ADAS has been enhanced.

There are no changes to the powertrain. In Malaysia, the Atto 3 is available in a single Extended Range variant equipped with a front axle electric motor producing 204 PS/310 Nm, and a Blade LFP battery with a capacity of 60.48 kWh, offering a range of up to 480 km (NEDC).
