Toyota GR MR2 prototype spotted at Fuji Speedway

This may well be the first appearance of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s latest high‑performance model.

Images posted on X by @You_SuiKoyoAZ show a mysterious prototype—believed to be the all‑new MR2—charging down the Fuji Speedway circuit.

Unique Features

The machine carries a two‑door coupe silhouette, paired with wide fenders on both the front and rear axles.

Its front and rear lighting units appear to be taken from the facelifted Toyota GR Yaris, while the rear end features a swan‑neck style rear wing.

A large air‑cooling intake integrated into the rear fender suggests that this prototype is running a mid‑engine layout.

A New Engine

The “new Toyota MR2” is expected to be powered by a newly developed G20E inline‑four engine.

More compact than the current 2.4‑litre turbo unit, the G20E is reportedly capable of producing around 300 hp and 400 Nm, with higher‑output versions potentially reaching up to 400 hp and 550 Nm.

Interestingly, the upcoming MR2 is not expected to follow the original recipe of a mid‑engine, rear‑wheel‑drive setup.

Instead, it is said to adopt an all‑wheel‑drive system equipped with front and rear Torsen limited‑slip differentials.

GR Lineup Continues to Grow

Beyond the MR2, Toyota previously showcased another prototype undergoing testing during a rally event earlier this year.

That test mule is believed to be an all‑new Celica built to WRC specifications for the 2027 season.

Earlier reports indicate that Toyota is indeed planning to revive the Celica nameplate.

The question now is whether this “new Celica” will share the same formula as the upcoming MR2—or take a completely different approach.
