Mitsubishi revives iconic Pajero nameplate, set to launch this fall

Mitsubishi has officially revived the iconic Pajero nameplate, last used in 2021.

The new off-road SUV model is expected to debut in the fall of 2026.

Features of the New Pajero

The all-new Mitsubishi Pajero will be built on a ladder-frame platform taken from the Triton pickup truck.

This approach will ensure that the Pajero remains a true off-road SUV, preserving the legacy and characteristics well-known to many.

Additional features will include a four-wheel-drive system, distinct suspension settings, and a more premium cabin design.

Pajero as a Vehicle Series

At the same time, Mitsubishi will not limit the Pajero name to a single model.

Instead, this iconic name will be launched as a series of off-road vehicles.

It has been reported that at least two additional, smaller models will be offered to consumers.

For reference, this approach was previously employed by Mitsubishi during the height of the Pajero brand in the 1990s and 2000s.

Among the Pajero models that were once offered are:

  • Pajero Sport (mid-size SUV, ladder-frame platform)
  • Pajero Junior (small SUV, unibody platform)
  • Pajero iO (small SUV, unibody platform)
  • Pajero Mini (kei-class SUV, unibody platform)

13 New Mitsubishi Models

By the end of March 2032, Mitsubishi is set to launch up to 13 new models.

In addition to the Pajero series, Mitsubishi will offer a variety of off-road models, including pickup trucks, SUVs, and minivans.

The Japanese market will receive several electric SUV models, pickup trucks, and two kei car models.

The ASEAN market is expected to get the new Xpander.

2026 Toyota Land Cruiser now with more powerful hybrid package – 457 hp, 790 Nm

Toyota continues to strengthen its position in the hybrid segment with the introduction of the 2026 Land Cruiser HEV model.

Launched for the Middle Eastern market, the Land Cruiser 300 Series is powered by a self-charging hybrid system, which consists of a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and a single electric motor.

Overall, the Land Cruiser HEV is capable of generating 457 hp and torque of up to 790 Nm, making it the most powerful Land Cruiser variant currently available.

This power is transferred to the four-wheel drive system via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of appearance, not much has changed except for the updated front bumper design, which is specific to this variant.

The rear features the “457 TT” and “HEV” emblems, indicating that it is a hybrid SUV.

The cabin space has also seen minor changes, with an updated instrument cluster now featuring specific graphics alongside a 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

A notable difference from the standard Land Cruiser model is the smaller fuel tank capacity, which is approximately 68 liters compared to 80 liters in the regular model.

Lastly, a power outlet is provided in the rear cargo area.

In the UAE, the Toyota Land Cruiser HEV is priced starting from AED 389,900 (approximately RM 450,000) for the VXR trim, and AED 409,900 (approximately RM 473,000) for the GR Sport trim.

GWM Tank 500 HEV Ultra: A new challenger in the off-Road SUV segment – First Drive

Who would have thought that the off-road segment previously dominated by Japanese brands, is now being penetrated by the latest model from a Chinese manufacturer?

However, unlike typical off-road SUVs that come with diesel engines, the manufacturer from the mainland focuses on hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines.

The advantages? Smaller displacement engines that contribute to lower road taxes, and significantly more power and capability for tackling difficult terrains.

One of the manufacturers offering modern off-road solutions is GWM, through its full-size SUV, the Tank 500 HEV.

So, if you’re starting to feel bored with Japanese-made models, why not give the Tank 500 off-road SUV a try, which is now officially available in Malaysia?

Recently, we were invited by GWM Malaysia to test drive this luxury hybrid SUV from Bandar Elmina to Penang, and here are our initial impressions of the Tank 500 HEV:

Imposing Dimensions

On the road, the Tank 500 HEV resembles a group of foreign delegates visiting Malaysia, especially when driven in a convoy.

Unlike the Tank 300, which has a retro SUV appearance, the Tank 500 presents a more modern and sleek image with a body design free of extraneous lines.

When compared to its competitor (what else but the Land Cruiser?), the Tank 500 is slightly smaller in dimensions.

However, it still measures over five meters in length, thanks to the full-size spare tire compartment at the rear.

The rear door design is also non-typical for SUVs on the market, featuring side hinges with a soft close function.

The writer had no trouble acclimating to the aesthetics of this SUV, though it would be more visually appealing if most of the chrome elements were toned down.

Cabin Space with Old-School Elements

Frankly speaking, the writer is not a fan of dashboard layouts that prioritize cramming all functions into a display screen.

So, upon entering the Tank 500’s cabin, I was relieved to find that most functions can still be operated with physical buttons.

In addition to the air conditioning control buttons, there are also essential function buttons located on the center console, complete with a large gear knob.

In front of the driver, there’s a 12.3-inch display screen and a head-up display, while the center screen measures 14.6 inches with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

The front seats are wrapped in Nappa leather and come equipped with various comfort features (ventilation, massage, electronic adjustments).

To enhance the acoustic experience, the Tank 500 is equipped with an Infinity audio system featuring 12 speakers for perfectly tuned music.

Comfort in exiting the cabin is aided by side steps that automatically extend when the door is opened.

Passenger comfort is further enhanced by a three-zone automatic air conditioning system. Rear passengers enjoy a separate control panel along with four air vents to ensure cool air reaches them effectively.

One of my favorite features? The analog clock beneath the infotainment screen. It’s a small touch that elevates the cabin atmosphere, making it feel like a more premium vehicle.

The wood finishes in several areas contribute to a more luxurious experience for an SUV priced below RM400,000.

Passenger Experience

One aspect that enhances comfort during the journey in the Tank 500 is the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) level, which is commendable for a ladder-frame SUV.

At moderately high cruising speeds, we found the cabin to be relatively quiet.

External wind noise is minimal, and there is less noise coming from the wheel arches.

As a passenger, I found that the Tank 500 offers ample head and legroom without making occupants feel cramped.

What about the third-row seating? I believe it is more suitable for children, or you can fold it down to access the 795-liter cargo space, which expands to 1,498 liters when the second-row seats are also folded down.

Smooth and Powerful Driving Experience, but…

As I took hold of the steering wheel, a few aspects challenged my initial perceptions.

First, the Tank 500 HEV is indeed stable and comfortable, even when driven at speeds exceeding the national limit on the highway.

Second, body control is predictable, despite the absence of sophisticated suspension.

Third, although this SUV is heavy, it does not feel sluggish.

The Tank 500 comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four hybrid engine (HEV).

On paper, the Tank 500 produces 346 PS and 648 Nm of torque, with power delivered to a four-wheel drive (4WD) system via a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission (9HAT).

However, there is one important thing to note.

Unlike the HEV system in the Haval H6, which is designed for fuel efficiency, the hybrid setup in the Tank 500 acts more as a power enhancer to ensure this 2.5-ton vehicle moves smoothly.

There is no issue in getting moving from a standstill, but the Tank 500 feels somewhat lacking in power when I want that extra push to overtake heavy vehicles ahead.

Interestingly, that extra power tends to appear at the wrong moments—when the SUV is cruising serenely at speeds above the national limit.

I was not alone in noticing this; several other media colleagues shared similar sentiments.

It is not a major issue, but I would prefer if that additional power assistance kicked in at the right time.

On average, with a mixed driving pattern on the highway, we managed to record a fuel consumption rate of around 11.5 liters per 100 km.

Regarding handling, there are areas for improvement.

One is the steering response, and the second is the braking system, which at times makes it difficult for me to gauge the required braking biting point.

The Tank 500 HEV comes standard with a double-wishbone suspension in the front and a multi-link setup at the rear, without any  sophisticated electronic adjustments.

Even with conventional settings, the suspension has been well-tuned for comfort and confidence over various road surfaces.

However, at times, the characteristics of a ladder-frame SUV are still noticeable, especially at lower speeds. This is something difficult to avoid, particularly for an SUV with this type of construction.

Hybrid SUV Ready for Off-Road Driving

Despite its various luxurious features, GWM does not shy away from equipping this SUV with multiple useful features and functionalities for off-road terrains.

These features include a low-range gearbox, three differential locks (front, center, and rear), tank-turn functionality, and off-road cruise control.

It is also capable of wading through water up to 800 mm deep. Perhaps one day we will share our off-road driving experience in the Tank 500.

Safety Features

Additionally, the Tank 500 is equipped with a host of advanced safety features, such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane-keeping assistance, lane departure warning, traffic crossing warning, blind spot monitoring, and automatic parking systems.

There are also six airbags and two ISOFIX anchors for child seats.

The most useful feature for this full-size SUV is undoubtedly the 360-degree surround-view camera system, complete with a bonnet transparency function.

Conclusion

The GWM Tank 500 could be an alternative for those looking to stand out from the existing market options.

Based on our brief two-day drive, it is challenging to fully explore the potential of this SUV.

However, with its specifications and comprehensive manufacturer warranty, along with a selling price below RM350,000, the GWM Tank 500 is capable of delivering an experience you wouldn’t expect from a Chinese manufacturer in the past.

This is not a substandard product to scoff at. It is a GWM Tank 500.

The Jetour T2 is a mid-size SUV that features a unibody construction and offers characteristics suitable for off-road driving.

In its standard version, the Jetour T2 boasts a boxy SUV design reminiscent of the popular Land Rover Defender.

This design element is accentuated by a variety of accessories available for customization, based on the presence of several body kit variants showcased at Auto Shanghai 2025.

Near the Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao hotel, where the media are staying, Jetour displayed the T2 Stargazer version, complete with accessories such as:

  • A front bumper with a protective bar
  • A more aggressive grille
  • Distinctive alloy wheels
  • Side steps
  • A taller engine hood
  • A roof rack
  • Wider front and rear fenders
  • A foldable ladder on the left side
  • An external storage box on the right side
  • An external storage compartment on the tailgate door
  • Protective metal for the rear light housing

At the Jetour International Business Annual Conference dinner, they presented two additional accessory concepts known as Stargazer Air and Nexus Sentinel.

Unlike the Stargazer, the Stargazer Air package is more streamlined, lacking features such as a roof rack, side storage box, and foldable ladder.

The Nexus Sentinel accessory package features a futuristic and modern design, with wider front and rear fenders, an aerodynamic roof rack, and a cyberpunk-style fuel tank cover.

For your information, Jetour has previously confirmed plans to launch the Jetour T2 SUV model in the Malaysian market soon.

Jetour T2 set to arrive in Malaysia: here’s what you need to know

During the launch of the Jetour Dashing in early April, Jetour Malaysia also revealed plans to introduce a lineup of crossover and off-road SUV models to the local market.

One of the off-road SUVs confirmed for entry into Malaysia is the Jetour T2, also known as the Traveller in the Chinese market.

The Jetour T2 is a mid-size SUV built on the Kunlun unibody platform and features design elements inspired by the popular Land Rover Defender.

It measures 4,785 mm in length, 2,036 mm in width, 1,960 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.

The Jetour T2 offers a 28-degree approach angle, a 30-degree departure angle, and a ground clearance of 220 mm, aided by MacPherson strut suspension at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear.

Similar to the Dashing, the design of the T2 was created by former Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu.

In terms of power, the Jetour T2 is available with a choice of a 1.5-liter turbo engine (181 hp/290 Nm) paired with a seven-speed DCT transmission.

There is also a 2.0-liter turbo engine option (251 hp/390 Nm) that can be matched with either a seven-speed DCT or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the T2 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbo engine combined with two electric motors and a three-speed DHT transmission, producing a total output of 375 hp and 610 Nm.

With a 26.7 kWh battery pack, the T2 PHEV (or T2 i-DM) can achieve an electric-only driving range of 139 km, with a total range of up to 1,000 km.

Currently, Jetour Malaysia has yet to announce the specifications for the T2 that will be launched later.

At the Hilton Shanghai Hongqiao, Jetour showcased the right-hand drive (RHD) version of the T2, which is reportedly still in the prototype stage.

In addition to the right-hand steering position, the Jetour T2 RHD is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital cluster screen, a 15.6-inch central display, a panoramic glass roof, and leather-wrapped seating.

On the center console, there is a rotary dial for selecting driving modes (economy, standard, sports, snow, mud, sand, rock, and adaptive X), as well as a relatively large gear shifter.

Along with a cargo space of 580 liters, the Jetour T2 also provides an external storage box mounted on the tailgate door.

Aligning with its nature as an off-road SUV, Jetour offers a variety of accessories that can be installed, including roof racks, storage boxes on the C/D pillars, foldable ladders, and more.

Advanced safety features included are front collision warning (FCW), lane departure warning (LDW), blind spot monitoring (BSD), door opening warning (DOW), rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane-keeping assistance (LKA), and adaptive cruise control (ACC).

One question remains: What price will Jetour Malaysia set for the T2 SUV?

Audi Q6 e-tron Offroad Concept comes with portal axles

Who would have thought that the premium-looking Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron electric SUV could transform into a more serious off-road vehicle?

That’s what Audi aims to showcase with the Q6 e-tron Offroad Concept, featuring a higher ground clearance and a wider body dimension.

Audi has also hinted that this model is ready to be realized as a production vehicle.

In terms of power, the Q6 e-tron Offroad is equipped with two electric motors producing 510 hp, driving all four wheels.

With an increased track width of 250 mm and a ground clearance raised by 160 mm, thanks to the use of four portal axles directly connected to the wheel hubs, this SUV is designed for enhanced off-road performance.

The newly designed portal axles allow this SUV to increase wheel torque by 50% compared to the 20 to 30% achieved with conventional designs.

As a result, the torque at all four wheels can reach 13,400 Nm, though the top speed is limited to just 175 km/h.

Overall, these upgrades enable this off-road SUV to tackle steep slopes with angles of up to 45 degrees.

The original design of the Q6 Sportback e-tron has been retained, but the front bumper has been fitted with extra LED lighting units, and the wheel arches have been enlarged to accommodate off-road tires.

Audi has previously unveiled several off-road concept models, such as the Activesphere and the AI:Trail Quattro, and they also participated in the 2024 Dakar Rally using the RS Q e-tron.
