Nissan stops selling most affordable manual cars in America

Once a popular choice, manual transmission passenger cars are now on the brink of extinction.

In the United States, Nissan has ceased sales of the most affordable Versa (Almera) variant, which is also the last model on the market equipped with a five-speed manual transmission.

In an official statement provided to Motor1, Nissan confirmed that “production of the manual Versa S variant will be discontinued, while other variants will continue to be sold.”

For reference, the Nissan Versa S (manual version) starts at a price of $18,330 (RM77,902), while the CVT version is priced at $20,130 (RM85,553).

Despite the Versa’s popularity in that market, the manual variant accounts for less than five percent of the total sales of the model.

The U.S. market still offers new models with six-speed manual transmission options, primarily consisting of high-performance models such as the BMW M2, Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai Elantra N, Porsche 911, and the Toyota Gazoo Racing lineup (GR86, GR Corolla, GR Supra).

2024 Nissan Almera gains sporty Kuro Edition, from RM83,888

FOR 2024, Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) introduces the Nissan Almera Kuro Edition, which brings a more rugged and sporty outlook, standard for all variants. It also comes with a new Glacier Grey color.

The basic package for the Almera Kuro Edition will feature a new black front grille and black rims (15- and 16-inch depending on the variant). Additionally, you can opt to add the Kuro Package or Kuro GT Package.

The Kuro Package, priced at RM8,000, includes black Tomei body kit (front and rear bumpers, side skirts, rear spoiler), door visor, door edge protector, kick plate, sports pedals, and ICE Cool tinting film.

On the other hand, the Kuro GT Package, priced at an additional RM3,200, comes with the GT Tomei spoiler and 16-inch Impul alloy rims. This package is limited to only 300 vehicles.

“With the enhancements of the KURO (Black) Edition, the Almera is now more visually striking than ever and we are confident that it will receive the attention it deserves as the most complete sedan in the B-segment,” said Christopher Tan, Director of Sales and Marketing at Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn. Bhd.

Other specifications remain similar to the previous Almera. It is powered by a 1.0-liter turbo engine producing 100hp and 152Nm, mated to the Xtronic CVT gearbox.

Safety features include Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (IFCW) and Intelligent Forward Emergency Braking (IFEB) as standard. The highest VLT variant is also equipped with Spot Warning (BSW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Intelligent Around View Monitor (IAVM) with Moving Object Detection.

The new 2024 Nissan Almera Kuro Edition is offered starting at RM83,888, and ETCM is offering a promotional price of only RM1,000 for the Kuro Package (original price RM8,000) and RM500 for the Kuro GT Package.
