GWM Malaysia has reached a significant milestone in its regional growth journey, with more than 1,100 locally assembled GWM WEY G9 vehicles exported to Thailand and Indonesia, strengthening Malaysia’s role as a strategic manufacturing and export hub for ASEAN.
The export achievements coincide with another major milestone, as cumulative GWM vehicle assembly in Malaysia surpasses 10,000 units since CKD production began in October 2024.
Together, these achievements mark GWM’s progress from serving the domestic market to supporting the wider ASEAN region, while reinforcing its commitment to Malaysia’s growing New Energy Vehicle (NEV) industry.
The export of more than 1,100 GWM WEY G9 vehicles to Thailand and Indonesia, marks an important step in expanding the reach of Malaysia-assembled vehicles across ASEAN.
As GWM’s flagship luxury MPV, the GWM WEY G9 combines advanced intelligent hybrid technology, premium comfort and all-wheel-drive performance. Its regional exports demonstrate growing confidence in Malaysia’s manufacturing capabilities and ability to serve international markets.
“Malaysia plays an important role in GWM’s ASEAN growth strategy. Our progress from local assembly to regional exports reflects the capabilities we are building together with our Malaysian partners. With our GWM WEY G9 now reaching customers in Thailand and Indonesia, we are proud to see Malaysia taking on a greater role in GWM’s regional growth,” said Stan Li Hao, Managing Director, Commercial Operations, GWM Malaysia.
GWM has reached a significant local assembly milestone, with over 10,000 vehicles assembled in Malaysia since 2024, reflecting the continued development of local manufacturing capabilities.
The journey began with the GWM HAVAL H6 HEV in 2024, assembled in partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) in Melaka.
This expanded with the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV in 2025, followed by today’s introduction of the new GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, further strengthening its locally assembled hybrid portfolio.
Beyond production volume, local assembly brings together global automotive technologies and Malaysian manufacturing expertise, while supporting technical knowledge transfer, workforce development and greater local industry participation.
Since entering Malaysia in 2022, GWM has continued to expand its product portfolio, dealer network and local assembly activities, building a stronger foundation for long-term growth.
“Malaysia is more than an important market for GWM. It is becoming an increasingly important part of our regional growth and manufacturing strategy. These milestones reflect our long-term confidence in Malaysia and our commitment to growing together with the country’s automotive industry, creating greater opportunities for local capabilities to contribute to ASEAN,” said Cui Anqi, Managing Director, Corporate Affairs, GWM Malaysia.
“Crossing 10,000 locally assembled vehicles reflects the progress we have made together with our manufacturing partners. More importantly, it demonstrates our growing commitment to Malaysia. From introducing new technologies to expanding regional exports, we want to create opportunities that contribute to the development of Malaysia’s automotive industry,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer, GWM Malaysia.
