There is another manufacturer interested in boxer engines besides Porsche and Subaru

When we talk about flat or boxer engines, the names of two manufacturers typically come to mind: Porsche and Subaru.

This unique engine configuration offers benefits in terms of better vehicle handling due to its lower center of gravity compared to conventional engines.

You might not suspect that a popular name in China is also venturing into producing boxer engines.

That name is none other than BYD!

This news is quite surprising as BYD already has a family of engines for its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model lineup.

This brand-new 2.0-liter turbo boxer engine will be paired with four electric motors to power the luxury sedan Yangwang U7.

Overall, it can generate up to 1,287 hp and 1,680 Nm of torque.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h can be achieved in just 2.9 seconds, a truly impressive figure for a sedan weighing 3 tons!

Interestingly, the engine serves primarily as a range extender to charge the battery, which then supplies power to the electric motors.

However, under certain conditions, this engine can deliver 272 hp and 380 Nm of power directly to the rear axle.

With the help of this boxer engine, BYD was able to design the Yangwang U7 with a lower hood profile, giving the sedan a sportier appearance.

Additionally, the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) aspects of this sedan are significantly improved due to the reduced vibrations from the boxer engine.

With the boxer range extender, the Yangwang U7 can travel up to 966 km on a full tank and fully charged battery, while the zero-emission range can reach up to 193 km.

In China, the BYD Yangwang U7 is priced between RMB628,000 and RMB708,000 (RM367,000 to RM414,000).

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid arrives with new generation hybrid powertrain, 194 hp

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek, now in its third generation, is available with a variant equipped with a new generation hybrid powertrain.

As previously reported, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid features a hybrid system consisting of a 2.5-liter boxer engine (158 hp, 209 Nm), two electric motors, and a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, producing a total output of 194 hp.

Interestingly, the Crosstrek Hybrid retains Subaru’s pure Symmetrical AWD system, meaning the addition of the hybrid system does not compromise its responsive on-road or off-road driving capabilities.

In terms of exterior design, there are not many differences in this hybrid model compared to the standard model, except for the Hybrid emblem featuring the horizontal engine logo and the dark gray 18-inch alloy wheels.

The ground clearance of the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid remains at 220 mm.

Inside the cabin, this crossover is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital cluster screen, alongside an 11.6-inch central infotainment screen, with wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

All variants of the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid will come with advanced safety features, including the EyeSight system that offers functions such as pedestrian and cyclist detection, advanced adaptive cruise control, and other active safety features like automatic reverse braking, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert.

There are two new colors available for the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl.

More details will be announced in the lead-up to the official launch, which is scheduled to take place this fall.
