XC60 crowned as Volvo’s best-selling car, surpassing the iconic 240 model

The legacy of the iconic Volvo 240 as the best-selling Volvo car in history has officially come to an end.

This is because that title has now been claimed by the Volvo XC60, with over 2.7 million units sold worldwide since its introduction in 2008.

Initially produced for the European market, this mid-size SUV became Volvo’s first global model to be assembled in China.

It was also named World Car of the Year in 2018.

When the Volvo 240 was launched in 1974, it set new safety standards, including a body design capable of absorbing frontal and rear impacts.

It was also among the first to introduce side impact protection, which later evolved into the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS).

In 1978, Volvo introduced the innovative child booster cushion.

The legacy of safety in cars continues with the XC60, which features various advanced technologies, such as the City Safety automatic braking system that can prevent or reduce collisions at speeds of up to 30 km/h.

In 2017, the XC60 became the first car in the world to introduce the Oncoming Lane Mitigation system, designed to avoid collisions with oncoming traffic.

According to Susanne Hägglund, Head of Global Offering at Volvo Cars, “Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car – almost every household had one.

“Today, the XC60 carries on that role – not just as a family option, but also as the most successful model in our history.”

Dacia Sandero is the best-selling car in Europe for 2024

Do you know which car was the best-selling in Europe for the year 2024?

It is neither a Japanese car nor a German compact car, but rather a vehicle from Romania.

More specifically, it is the Dacia Sandero (“good news!” as James May would say).

According to data from industry analyst Jato Dynamics, a total of 268,101 units of the Dacia Sandero were registered in Europe over the past year.

In second place is the Renault Clio, with a difference of over 50,000 units compared to the Dacia Sandero, followed by the Volkswagen Golf, which had 215,715 units sold.

Sales of the most popular model in 2023, the Tesla Model Y, fell by 17 percent to 209,214 units; however, it remains the leader in the category of the most popular electric vehicles.

Speaking of EVs, the market share for these zero-emission vehicles decreased from 15.7 percent in 2023 to 15.4 percent last year, while the percentage for petrol engine models increased from 47.8 percent to 48.4 percent.

The decline in EV sales is attributed to the withdrawal of incentives and the average selling price still being high and unaffordable, according to Jato Dynamics’ analysis.

Meanwhile, demand for hybrid vehicles increased from 9.9 percent to 11.8 percent, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for only 7.3 percent (down from 7.7 percent).

Honda N-BOX still remains the best-selling car in Japan

Despite Honda’s overall sales figures being difficult to surpass those of the Japanese giant Toyota, at the very least, Honda has managed to prove that it can be the best-selling model there.

The model in question is the Honda N-BOX kei car.

Yes, this boxy car is not only popular among kei car enthusiasts here, but it also holds a significant name and can outshine its competitors.

According to a report from Response JP, the Honda N-BOX recorded sales of 102,226 units during the first half of the fiscal year 2024 (April-September), marking an increase of 1.8 percent compared to the same period last year.

This makes the Honda N-BOX the best-selling car for the third consecutive year!

The second place is held by the kei car Suzuki Spacia (80,179 units), followed by the Toyota Corolla (77,030 units), and the Toyota Yaris (73,052 units).

Impacted by the safety scandal issue, the popular car Daihatsu Tanto dropped three ranks to sixth place, with sales of 53,177 units, marking a decrease of 26.3 percent.

An interesting point coming from the Land of the Rising Sun is the rather slow transition rate to EVs, where EVs only make up 1.3 percent of new vehicle sales, marking a decrease of 0.6 percent.
