Mercedes wants to put big chunks of its budget into combustion engines

After realizing that their electrification goals may be too ambitious, Mercedes is now allocating a significant portion of their budget to internal combustion engines.

According to an interview with the German media Wirtschaftswoche, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius stated that ICE (internal combustion engine) technology “will persist until after 2030”. Significant investments are needed to ensure that these engines continue to comply with increasingly stringent standards.

Källenius mentioned that the S-Class and its facelift are expected in 2026, stating, “We have invested significantly more in updating the S-Class model with combustion engines than we typically do for a facelift.”

Mercedes’ goal is to ensure that their conventional engines are at the “highest level of technology”. Without significant investment in petrol and diesel engines, the luxury brand “will abruptly halt combustion engine sales around 2027 or 2028”.

Mercedes realized the need to acknowledge that the transition to EVs was not progressing as planned. Three years ago, they mentioned that PHEV and EV vehicles would represent approximately 50 percent of annual sales by 2025.

However, it seems unlikely. At one point, Mercedes stated they would be fully electric by 2030 in some countries “if market conditions allow”.

Now, their new goal is for PHEV and EV to represent half of sales by the end of this decade (2030). However, according to Källenius, the objective for carbon neutrality by 2040 remains unchanged.

Mercedes-AMG GLA35 4Matic refreshed for Malaysia, now features mild-hybrid system

IN addition to the C43 and A35 models, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has also unveiled another model, the Merc-AMG GLA35 4Matic, which is also available as CKD (locally assembled).

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) today introduced the most powerful version to date for the C-Class, the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic. It is assembled at MBM’s assembly plant in Pekan and is offered at a price of RM443,888.

Unlike its previous generation which had a V6 biturbo engine, the 2024 C43 is powered by the M139I 2.0-liter turbo engine that remains powerful, with an output of 408hp at 6,750rpm and 500Nm of torque at 5,000rpm.

This longitudinally-mounted 4-cylinder engine is the first production engine with a turbocharger that uses an electric exhaust gas charger. Technology derived from the world of Formula 1 is designed for quick response at all rpm levels.

The Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic also features a 10kW and 150Nm powerful electric motor. Paired with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G 9-speed gearbox, this sedan can accelerate to 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds. The top speed is 250km/h.

Other features of this new C43 chassis include Dynamic Body Control with Adaptive Damping System, and 19-inch 5-spoke AMG rims.

After several months of introducing the GLA200 facelift, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has now also launched the GLA250 4Matic AMG Line. It is a more powerful version with a sportier design.

As usual, compared to the GLA200 which is equipped with a Renault 1.3-liter turbo engine, this GLA250 variant is powered by a Mercedes engine – a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo with an output of 224PS and 350Nm of torque. This output is transmitted to all wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox and the 4Matic traction system.

What’s new is that the GLA250 also features a mild-hybrid system consisting of a 48-volt belt starter generator (BSG), contributing to an additional 14PS and 150Nm of power.

As a result, the acceleration performance from 0-100 is 6.8 seconds, one second faster than the GLA200. The maximum speed is 240km/h.

In terms of exterior features, this new Mercedes GLA250 4Matic comes with a sporty AMG bumper, LED High-Performance headlights with new graphics, new taillights, a diffuser, and 19-inch 5-spoke AMG rims. It also includes sport brakes with perforated discs.

Safety features include Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, Door Opening Warning, and Park Assist.

The Mercedes GLA250 4Matic AMG Line is offered at a price of RM295,888 without insurance. This includes a four-year unlimited mileage warranty.

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance is the fastest model ever produced

WHILE the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance is a hybrid sports car, it is the fastest model ever released. Introducing the latest two-door performance coupe from Mercedes-Benz, and it makes hybrid technology anything but boring.

Instead, the hybrid system contributes to the car’s performance. The hybrid nature can be seen in the term “E Performance” in the car’s name.

The heart of the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S is a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo unit, combined with an electric motor. The V8 engine alone generates 603hp, but its combination with the electric motor provides a total output of 805hp.

What’s even more intriguing is the combined torque of 1,420Nm! This easily delivers a 0-100km/h acceleration in just 2.7 seconds, making it the fastest AMG model ever produced.

The electric system in the GT63 S E Performance has a capacity of 6.1kWh and can be charged using a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. The GT63 S can be driven in EV mode for a limited range, but its electric system remains focused on performance.

It is equipped with a 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox, delivering power to all wheels through the 4Matic+ system. In normal driving, the electric motor only sends power to the rear wheels, but when slip occurs, it can be shifted to the front.

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance also comes with a rear-axle steering system, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, 6-piston ceramic composite brakes, and 20-inch wheels as standard.

You can also choose 21-inch wheels. In terms of appearance, it’s difficult to differentiate the E Performance version from the regular AMG GT63.

There are special badges at the rear, as well as a charging port cover. Additionally, the aerodynamic package has been updated specifically for the hybrid powertrain.

The cockpit and cabin also receive the standard Mercedes-AMG treatment. The price has not yet been announced, and this fastest Mercedes-AMG will start selling at the end of 2024.
